Thread regarding CA Technologies (CA Inc.) layoffs

Islandia WILL be safe

The naysayers are wrong, wait and see. There are so many critical positions in Islandia especially support that there will be few layoffs. Maybe one more floor closing tops. I am so confident that I will still have a job is that I’m going to lease a new car today.

I work in Islandia and most of my team got transition. 1 or 2 got stay. No day 1 terms but the vast majority are out in July.

So...... Who was right and who was wrong about Islandia?

They can easily work around WARN by issuing the WARN notification on the same day as they terminate you, but they keep you on payroll for 90 days. They will just tell you to stop reporting to work, but "technically" you are still employed for the next 90 days which counts as your "advance notice" for WARN purposes. CA has done exactly this many times.

@VYbojYh-1jcw stupid conclusion. All that statement meant was that she wouldn't confirm, not that there no changes coming. Islandia is toast.

Newsday article proves no concerns for Islandia

https://www.newsday.com/business/technology/broadcom-s-18-9-billion-purchase-of-ca-technologies-to-close-monday-1.22790490

“A CA spokeswoman said Friday that there were no additional changes at the Islandia site that she could confirm.”

She would have to be in the know, and she confirmed no additional changes. So there.

There will be NO WARN. I have no worries that I am losing my job, support is a necessary function and customers will demand US based support.

From what I remember anyone who thinks the absence of a WARN act notification equals to safety are kidding themselves.

Take Islandia as an example.

The 'plant' is not closing - so that does not trigger WARN.

Some layoff's are deemed 'economic reason' and can trigger instant terminations

The WARN act might not have to be for Islandia. They could layoff 499 employees without having to provide advance notice (the threshold is 500).

And lets not forget the Severance pay everyone gets offered. Mine was over 40 pages long - covering all aspects of basically 'take the money - and you can't complain or sue etc'.

Islandia was at about 1000 people last May, and the layoff hit 150 people then. More people have probably left since then... but lets say there are 850 left.

My prediction? 150 people cut immediately. Almost everyone else outside of Mainframe and a few key engineers in distributed will be put on Transition Plans of varying lengths (a few months to almost a year). A year from now - one floor left, if that. 150-200 people left in the building.

Why? Because despite what people want to think, there is NOTHING of value to Broadcom in most of Islandia except Mainframe - which is all they seem to talk about. They see everything outside of engineering and sales as backoffice functions to be eliminated. They see most of the distributed products as outside their interest, and think they can run the survivors even leaner and cheaper than CA does - making sales, services, support and development in Islandia a cost, not a benefit.

Warn Act notices are often backdated - https://labor.ny.gov/app/warn/ - would not shock me if the layoffs happen, and then it finally shows up on the site.

Don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble here, but WARN notices go out with your notification letters, not in advance. Do the math, WARN will be activated for Islandia. It is already guaranteed, if you don’t believe me ask the question on Yammer before they shut it down. Stop being naive, it is better for you to realize the truth now and process it. Guaranteed for Islandia.

I agree minimal impact, people are just getting worried for no reason. I predict no more than 150 exited right away, 150 on transition which will change to FT once Broadcom realizes how different the software business is and how these people are needed. Islandia will be fine with only small changes.

Monday morning, no WARN yet, or ever. Islandia will not be greatly affected.

I'm not sure why everyone is so concerned about their salary being reduced. Broadcom definitely has some negative traits, but pay is not one of them. They've been consistently ranked as one of the best paying companies in the world. Most people are likely getting fired on the 7th or within a year, but those who will stay will likely be well payed, for as long as they last.

No one gets reduced.

Wait... if you are allowed to stay you won’t be getting your usual Salary? So everyone gets reduced after 45 days?

WARN will be in place for Islandia, at least 250 or more. I bet a year from now once all the transition people fall off the headcount will be 150 to 200 remaining.

Islandia employees will be successful no matter what AVGO decides to do. NYC has tons of jobs and the Islandia team is extremely talented so anyone TERMed by AVGO will probably land on their feet and find something much better. #EmpireState

Warn will be triggered which means at least 250 are gone which will be on day 1. If you are in Finance you will have a better chance of being on a transition. HR, Support, GIS, Legal, Education get ready for a blood bath!

I was just going to type the same thing, he never said the Islandia people were safe. He also has spent 100’s of hours answering the same questions from people in Islandia about the WARN act. If the WARN act wasn’t going to occur he would simply have said “WARN won’t be triggered”. You should learn to read between the lines. WARN will be in place in Islandia which means at least 250 people will be laid off at a minimum. Many will probably be on transition, but bottom line, they will be laid off over the course of the year. Certain of it. Yammer shuts down tonight I think and then Broadcom takes over and we won’t hear much from the new people outside of you are fired or you have a job and have to wait another 45 days to find out you compensation. I’m sure Broadcom will be great for some peopl, but it is time.

GDL said no such thing. He said there is no immediate plan to close the office. That doesn't mean we are safe. I work in Islandia and i'm scared as hell.

I have seen nothing about WARN. GDL said Islandia would be safe. You are all just trolling to get people upset.

That great, only 100 people being laid off means the WARN act won’t be triggered in Islandia. Such great news. I am willing to be you money the layoff will trigger WARN which means at a minimum over 250 people will be let go. Wake up.

You will all see. My manager told me most people in Islandia are safe, especially support and critical back office functions. Maybe 100 layoffs total here. Very little changes.

Lol @ critical positions

Broadcom doesn't care. In many cases people will be laid off without even consulting their direct managers. I know for a fact that my managers have not been told anything and nobody has consulted them with regard to who should be kept and who should go.

People in ITC said that it seemed almost random as far as who was selected for transition vs keep vs term.

No one is safe because the decisions are getting made by people who know nothing about the organization.
