Thread regarding CA Technologies (CA Inc.) layoffs

Open Rant: BRCM needs to learn what a software company means

BRCM very much need to understand that chrome is not the only software in the world and every software is not just designed to work on chrome. There seems to be a thinking that everything should work only inside chrome. World is not so simple. Internet doesn't mean just G or F. There's lot more than them.

It and it's employees quickly need the know what it really means to be a software company. Unless they realize this CA will be doomed and will take BRCM down with it.

Pro tip for @VVUbork-1gre, HT doesn't care if the business has legs for 10 or 20 years. He cares if it is a segment leader NOW with good margins. Everything else can be managed in the future.

@VVUbork-1pvg, that is all he might care about now, but mainframe is ultimately a dead end. If IBM keeps investing in the Z platform it may last another 10 or 20 years, but it is not really growing as a overall base. Even with new Linux sales the numbers of sites is still shrinking. That is not really IBM's fault, more industry consolidation and outsourcing to GSPs. They'll probably keep a steady profit, but the revenue will likely remain flat or only a slight grow. They will need to either invest in distributed or buy someone successful. Honestly, if I were them I would look at someone like Splunk or McAfee as the next acquisition. I think Splunk is way over valued, but they are a leader in their area. CA had a chance to buy them years ago for about $300 million and balked. Now their market cap is $15 billion.

So, even he said mainframe is all he cares. That's only true at this moment.

You can change his mind by doing a sale job of your lifetime. Of course, this is assuming you have a kick a-- product which is under appreciated at the moment.

Let me tell you a story. When Hock first become CEO in Avago Technologies ( before broadcom ), he said he hate Fabs ( chip factories ). Cap investment is huge, margin is low, can't compete unless you have scale. That's what's in his mind and he said it out loud. All he said are true for CMOS fabs.

Then, we showed him we have this custom little thing called FBAR. It is custom and new. Boutique in house process and not expensive like CMOS. Number one filter in the world. Agilent put multi years of R&D in this. Agilent can't take advantage of it but Hock learned and take advantage of it big time.

Lesson here is : you show him you have a solid, kick a-- product and he will change his mind and put his sales power behind it.

A software company is one thing, but a mainframe software company is a different beast. It's like mammals vs. dinosaurs. Due to a nature of BRDM's business they they may understand dinosaurs better.

They care about the 55% of revenue that is mainframe-related. Sticky and profitable. Who cares about “cool” products that don’t earn any profits?

BRCM really doesn’t understand what a software company is. My prediction is that the cuts will be so deep, etc that the $4b revenue of CA will be halved by the end of the next FY.

I know some who will stay and they may not stay through the year, from the rumored comp changes.

BRCM knows software..yep ..they know how to destroy a growing profitable business.

Yeah.... CA isn't a software company it's a sales company.

Jesus...you realize that CA isn’t really a software company, right? They just acquire, sell and ultimately ruin perfectly decent applications. All these CA nuts running around acting like technology has lost some innovative bulwark is really weird to me.

This is a classic old CA comment. Old Man: "Web? Ha, Get off my lawn! back in my day we had IE and we liked it!"

OP must be a dejected GIS employee based in Islandia. He doesn’t know what a real software company is working for CA for so many years anyway.

They don't care. They want our mainframe profits and our customer list to sell them hardware. Software is an afterthought.
