Thread regarding CA Technologies (CA Inc.) layoffs

BikeBoy Tax Loophole

Bikeboy pushed all of off to open up HIS Stamford, CT office one week before the acquisition news. Why push us to find a site, negotiate terms, and open a site a few weeks before the announcement comes out? So bikeboy can avoid NYC income tax. The site wasn't even 100% finished when he "relocated".

Good luck trying to sublease the space Octane.

@VU3HIcB-tkh who lives in CT and pushed for the office? Just Bikeboy?

Is this the office? Funny how it still shows a NYC fax number. Ties to the city still?

Stamford, CT

200 Elm Street, Office 140A, Stamford, CT US 06902

Phone: +1 800 225-5224

Fax: +1 212 415-6895

Looks like lease was signed earlier in the year, for 25000 square feet. Did they get CT tax incentives to do so?

"Founded in 1976 to sell mainframe software, CA Technologies focuses on a range of software to help developers create other applications, as well as test, monitor and secure systems, including “cloud” systems that feed applications and data over the internet. It is the New York City-based company’s first major Connecticut office. CA Technologies has other Northeast locations in New Jersey, Massachusetts and its historic base of Islandia, N.Y., on Long Island. Over 12 months through last March, CA Technologies added 800 employees to give it 11,800, with the company having been featured in Fortune and Working Mother Magazine among others for its family-friendly work policies."

ha ha ha ha

If there was a serious push to sell the company earlier this year, as there must have been, it was extremely fiscally irresponsible for Mike and the ELT to sign a lease, build out and open an office.

LF doesn't live in CT, she lives in NYC. Now your complaint to the government will already look like you don't know what you are talking about if they decide to audit her.

I reported this to NY via that link. I encourage everyone does the same. Maybe not for JL who lives in NYC and is not getting any parachute just severance. But definitely for MG, LF and others who live in CT and couldn’t be bothered to travel to 520 Madison.

@VU3HIcB-bcf I wasn’t,t being disparaging on the OP just the person lecturing on getting the facts rights, all the while confusing NYC and NYS taxes and telling us to review Area 51 of the tax code. I agree it’s worth reporting the tax evasion just for giggles.

It’s also worthwhile to note the closing and layoffs were timed to be right after the US midterm elections were completed. Last thing Hockaloogie or BikeBoy wanted was reports of thousands of US layoffs the day before the election given all those goofy pictures of Rev. Moon in a MAGA hat next to Trump.

@VU3HIcB-wgl still about greed and being above the system. A million dollars will buy a nice bike and some wine, or he could spend it at a charitable auction making him look good and then get the writeoff.

I may file a complaint with the New York tax people just out of spite. And also let Newsday know, right after the Islandia layoffs happen. It’s clear they knew for long beforehand that CA was being sold, and they would have known weeks before the announcement what they were getting out of it. This is tax evasion pure and simple and New York takes a dim view of this.

Report fraud at https://www.tax.ny.gov/reporttaxfraud.htm. If they knew they were getting payout and then moved office this is tax evasion.

High end state tax is about 8.8%vs ct 6.99.% On $50m that’s about $905k tax savings. Yea I’m sure bike boy can buy a sweet ride, but all the trouble for 905k? Even before his parachute heck even before coming to CA bike boy had more money than he knows what to do with. Think he’s really this greedy? It’s like someone with 1m net worth trying to save 9000. Seems like more work than it’s worth

@VU3HIcB-ecg No need to be a douche. While NYC taxes aren’t an issue NYS taxes are. This seems to be a move purely for tax avoidance. They knew the company was being sold at that point and already would have negotiated their golden parachute.

NY State, because of so many higher income people leaving, is really aggressive in pursuing their tax dollars. I do think it’s worth a call to the revenue folks to ensure the entire ELT pays their fair share. Especially as this sale means a lot of New Yorkers losing their job.

Sweet Jesus how are the arrogant posters wrong so often.

There hasn’t been a NYC non resident tax in 15 years, at least. Moving to Stamford can certainly make a difference in state tax.

If you are going to be an a--hole when correcting people, please get your facts 100 percent accurate. Do a little research, analysis and thinking before coming to a conclusion, it will help your career as an internet troll you douchebag buttercup jungle vag--a.

NYC tax for non-residents is triggered at 183 days. Mike, and many executives in the NYC office, were definitely not in NYC greater than 183 days, which is about 70% of days in a 250 day work year. Stamford office is a waste, but it wasn’t about personal taxes. Mike and a few key execs will spend more time worrying about the Section 4999 20% parachute tax. Be smart. Do a little research, analysis and thinking before coming to a conclusion. It’ll serve you well in your next job.

@VU3HIcB-ukt actually NY taxes based on location of work as well as residence. I had a job several years ago in Manhattan, where I commuted weekly and stayed in a hotel in the city. Residence remained in a distant state. Yet I was forced to pay NY state taxes. Relocating office out of NY before landing the big check would be a pretty decent tax strategy for BikeMike. And it's in character - personal benefit regardless of impact to company finances or employee's lives.

Interesting, I may report him and the ELT to the NYS Dept of Revenue. If the intent was to move the office so he wouldn’t have to pay NY taxes on his golden parachute he will find differently. NY is very aggressive in determining “domicile” for state tax purposes.

I encourage others to report him as well.

NYC income tax is only for NYC residents. You're thinking of NY vs CT state taxes.
