I wish I was getting a severance but I don't think I am. I think I will get a "permanent" offer because I expect the product I work on will be divested eventually.

You won't lose your severance or stock if you stay in with the transition and Broadcom lays you off at a later date. Being on transition simply postpones the layoff, probably will give you a definite end date which can be rather useful when applying for new jobs, and many folks are being given hefty retention bonuses during the time they will be working with Broadcom.
To the best of my knowledge- which is pretty good- an employee will not lose their severence or their stock unless they downright quit or refuse to work in transition if they're given a transition spot, which is the same thing as outright quitting.
The headline reminded me of Soup Nazi from Seinfeld. No severance for you!

Stop it.
This is what bothers me the most. I actually want to go this time, but I've been told I'm "safe". WTF!!! I think transition would be the best. Work 6-9 months and get a nice bonus on top of severance. Any longer and there is a risk of Broadcom ****ing you over. I don't have a problem working for them, I just don't want to lose my severance a year from now.
