Are sites such as Glassdoor and Indeed paid by big companies so that they post positive reviews only and delete honest and genuine reviews if they are not in favor of the employer? Do they just approve posts that say the company is all roses and sunshine?
Where should one seek honest reviews about companies especially if trying to move to a new place that I don't have anybody there to ask prior to joining? I think thelayoff.com is not the best place either. Any suggestions?
I tried to post my honest review on both Glassdoor and Indeed but my reviews were deleted. Here is my review about the PMIC VI group in San Diego:
H1B Visa Sweatshop
Pros
Campus is big in San Diego, San Diego is a fine city to live in, salary, perks, and benefits used to be ok but have been declining over the last few years due to tough market. The company was almost bought by Broadcom early this year.
Cons
I will limit my evaluation to the PMIC VI because that is the only team I have been working in since I joined Qualcomm:
-
In the PMIC VI people are doing low tech tests on the PMIC modules. Those tests can be done by any experienced technician or a fresh graduate. They hire people with industrial experience or advanced degrees to do low level bench test job. They lie during the interview about the nature of the job even if you ask specific questions. All answers are lies to make the department look great.
-
Yelling, condescending behavior, and humiliating in front of others are very common in this group and encouraged by management especially if you are on a work visa. They know that it is tough to move to another job while on H1B visa especially with the tight rules that current administration has imposed.
-
Evaluation is not based on merits or how hard you worked and delivered; it is rather based on whether the director of the group likes you or not. Since you are a replaceable glorified technician your skills don’t matter in this group.
-
The director of engineering for this group speaks engrish in the lab and meetings so you better work on improving your engrish skills otherwise soon you will be an outcast.
-
The day to day environment is quite petty. Insults, backstabbing, and jealously is very common. You won’t gain any transferable technical skills in this job. You will get pigeonholed into one thing, learn nothing, work long hours, get blamed for things that are not your fault and not get credit for anything good you do. Raises are c-ap, promotions few, tools are buggy, and the competent people who could teach you well have either already left or they no longer give a darn. It will be a waste of your hard gained knowledge and it will be very difficult to get out.
-
Don’t go to HR for any issue or complaint related to work. They are useless and exist only to assist in hiring/firing, and defending the company against disgruntled employees who file harassment or other charges against the company. They are NOT on your side. If you ever have a legitimate complaint, go to a lawyer instead of HR.

I had no body tell me how toxic the work environment in the PMIC VI before I joined. I am trying hard to get out as soon as possible but it is very difficult because I didn’t acquire any new skills throughout the period I have been working here. Don’t commit career s---c-de and join the PMIC VI. If you are already working there and have self respect you should find another place.
