Thread regarding Kroger Co. layoffs

Wrong people are being cut

The fact is Kroger stores are staffed with too many salaried assistant store managers. Most stores have at least 3. That is just ridiculous and a waste of labor dollars. Most of them perform no physical labor and refuse to help where help is needed.

Can't agree more with @O7IIB92-7twtn. Either make them help out, or get rid of them. Wrong people are being cut, people who actually do stuff around here.

Only THREE ASMs per store?! How does anyone, up to and including the SM, ever get vacation time or coverage with call outs? Scary

There is no possible way you can know if your son is a worker or not. Sadly many are not because they are not held accountable and the simple truth is most of their supervisors are just as lazy. There are a few that break the mold... but that’s all. There is no need to have more than one ASM with the exception of the busiest stores. Amazing how we ever survived up until 2005 with only one ASM per store

When I worked at a CM (for 5 years), we had a really great ASM who would bust his tail off every day to help whatever dept needed it to hit arbitrary uptimes, get filled, take cardboard, whatever, and he was also a leader. He literally got told by Lisa Cheney (the vice president of king soops) on a corporate walk that he needed to stop. Kroger is just stupid to create the additional positions in the first place, then not utilize them, and then to take them away 3 or 4 years later. Don't get me wrong, our other 2 ASMs were completely useless, didn't even know standards. But guess who just lost is job because of these layoffs? The hardworking one, because he had the lowest seniority.

Store managers and ASMs can do any work within the store. They are exempt from the union exclusions. It is in Article 1, section 1 of every contract book.

My son has worked at Kroger for over 10 years and is now an ASM. I can assure you he earns every dollar he brings home. It’s frustrating when sorry employees no show, don’t call etc....

Sadly the ASMs and the store management cannot do much due to Union contracts. Mangers cannot perform any kind of clerk work. I have been both sides of the fence HR Kroger ASM stepped down; left and now have a part time job as a cashier a few days a week. I have seen both sides of the Union Fence.
