This is no news as many Universitites are notorious for this. However we are downsizing. Our third floor is getting eliminated we’ve lost 2 full timers and a few adjuncts that were poached by other more reputable universities in the Area. That has created a vacuum, and now that vacuum needs to be filled by adjuncts. There are others like me on my campus that commute to other campuses because the full timers here are dropping like flies. However adjuncts can only teach 4 classes in a quarter and 10 classes in a year. A few of us are over our limit next month. I can’t find any information that I can print or download from the intranet. Everything is protected. And your HR person is Aunt Lydia from Handmaids Tale. Friends, past and present of Ai we need help, so that we have negotiating power to take to Ai and they just don’t say “its because of Obamacare”. It’s not. I know it’s not because the Chair told me so, but they don’t know why. I’m thinking it changes our status from part time to full time. Is there someone, ANYONE who can help us

Yes, yes they are screwing with adjuncts. You are needed until you are not. Adjuncts are temporary employees. It is the same at all schools.

You've been told correctly that any class over 10 would be full-time. That being said, there is a calculation that is done by HR for all adjuncts and reported for the Affordable Care Act and that formula is a bit complex. I've been told how it's calculated, but that was months ago and I don't remember enough of it to share. It is possible that with the number of courses you've taught, you could receive health benefits via the ACA marketplace. I know other adjuncts who did. Most of the information you would need would be in a faculty management guide that's not going to be available to you. That guide outlines faculty jobs, descriptions, compensation, course loads, accreditation compliance regarding faculty, etc. Campus leadership, including program chairs, should be able to access it. With the campuses closing, the number of courses taught by adjuncts may not matter. Classes need to be taught.

Yes, it is all about heath insurance. Obamacare changed a great faculty centered education system to part time faculty based on cost! Remember each schedule hour also has prep hours which are calculated towards full time and mandatory Obamacare (which may cost more than your salary).
