Thread regarding Cummins Inc. layoffs

Exemplary performance ratings, then a pink slip

I was at Cummins for 16 years with good or exemplary performance ratings then got "laid off" in December of 15. This ended up being a blessing because 1. I had realized how much engineering job salaries outside of Cummins had outpaced Cummins during that time and 2. I had forgotten what it was like to not have to look over your shoulder year round waiting for Hr to come get you to lay you off.

Cummins only values it's cheap foreign engineering and technical force because of their cost. When I look back at all the very skilled and dedicated engineers they walked out over my time there I can fully see how they cut their own throats on innovation and quality.

If you aren't east Indian or Chinese, then you have no future with the company. I really hope that Trump follows through with his campaign promises and kills H1Bs and punishes companies that move jobs overseas to keep companies like Cummins from treating the US workforce like cattle.

If h1bs could work for any company they wanted, no one would work at cummins. CMI game the system and prefer status que to hold on to people. No young person with a choice would move to Columbus/Seymour unless...h1b/ student visa/ whatever.

“ There is a reason Cummins employs foreign labor - they find it very hard to attract American engineers to southern Indiana. ”

This is exactly correct. I’m an engineer on the west coast and there was NOBODY in my graduating class that was looking to the Midwest for a job. It’s just bending over.

It's true. I was part of the 15 layoff as well. In my outgoing interview I asked specifically why I was laid off with a good performance record. I was told it wasn't performance based and that group managers didn't choose who was laid off. I was told that there were a couple of "requirements" set up by the "upper management" and they chose those they felt didn't meet their requirements. The outgoing interviewer told me she didn't know what the requirements were. You say the original post is racist, but the fact is, I do have a friend with paperwork from a meeting directing that Caucasian males are no longer supposed to be considered for hiring. I have another friend who went on an annual recruiting trip, he was told if he didn't quit recruiting Caucasian employees he would no longer be allowed to go on his recruiting trips. So it may sound racist but it's true. I will never understand why race and gender should play into hiring. The person who best fits all of the requirements should be hired regardless of race or gender, and yes I have worked in management and hiring positions.

Racist or not - he speaks the truth about This company.

Ask around and see how many other people have suffered similar circumstances. The landscape is littered.

This company is to be avoided.

There is a reason Cummins employs foreign labor - they find it very hard to attract American engineers to southern Indiana. Young American engineers gravitate towards big cities like San Francisco, LA, NY or the multiple up and coming cities of the South.

Foreign workers, meanwhile, do not mind relocating anywhere. Since only 10% of american companies sponsor immigrant visas, foreigners are less likely to leave their jobs as well.

The other reason young local talent cannot be seen in Cummins - diesel engines. It is a dead field, and is highly dependent on the automotive market. Immigrants have never seen the kind of economic destruction that follows in the wake of an automotive collapse. They are ready to keep working in stagnant jobs as long as their visas are being sponsored by the company.

Hey "CEO"! Cummins did me a favor by laying me off. Two years later and I am making 22,400 more than I was with them and in the same area (I did not have to even move). My contributions are valuable and with this company I will NEVER have my job outsourced to India or be replaced by A cheap H1B. Now that my retirement is fully shifted out of their plan, Cummins could be purged by radioactive fire and I would not care.

That's a very racist reply. Now I can totally relate why they laid you off. You do not have right attitude even while typing this message and 100% Cummins did perfectly right by laying you off!
