Thread regarding CA Technologies (CA Inc.) layoffs

Hock's MO

I have been with Hock since he bought us from Agilent Technologies. Here is his MO.

1) He is aware of our existence down to per team level. ( The 5-10 person per team which each one of us are in)

2) He will centralized IT, HR, Legal. The support org and keep them at a very low level.

3) He does not cut across the board.

4) He will demand an explicit set of financial goal from each GM. ( Gross margin, growth target, target customers... etc etc. The GM will decide the layoffs if there is one) Your bonus will tie to these goals and he is , to me, very generous in that department. At the minimum, above average.

5) RSU, bonus and salary are your component of compensation package. The ratio varies depends on your rank. But that is it. No we are a family stuff, non-essential perks. He pays you well and you give him what he wants. That's the relationship.

6) If your BU doesn't meet his criteria, he will divest the BU out. I don't think there is ever a division so bad that he has to shut it down. He has been able to sell them first.

7) If you guys worry about outsourcing, that's GM's decision. He will get pressured by financial goals and the GM will be the one who decide the best internal structure to give himself the biggest bonus. Keep in mind, just cutting won't work because Hock wants a "sustainable franchise". You will hear this terms a lot. It means number 1 in the area of your expertise and it is hard for others to replace you. It means you can command higher gross margin. This is how he can pay you more than the average company.

This is obviously a post from within Broadcom's corporate M&A group about how "hard but fair" he will be. Really, he knows every team in the company down to a 5-10 person level? Really, it is up to a GM if they cut or not? Hock wants a sustainable franchise? Then why has he demoralized every person in the company? I've seen it before, this gross ineptitude by power-hungry old dudes who can't stop acquiring companies to rip them apart because their parents didn't love them.

Really “Sally”, you thought Bike Boy was in it for the long haul? What gave you this impression? Was it the long hours he dedicated to the job? His experience in selling every company he worked for? How committed he was to riding his bike most days at 2 in the afternoon when dedicated people about to lose their jobs were working around the clock? His months of vacation he took every year? Yes, I said months not weeks. Was it his flying around the world on a private plane at shareholders expense that made you think this? Opening an office for himself near his home while making others return to the office from working from home? Or perhaps his sponsoring of bike rides that gave you this impression? You are right about a few things in your post, but come on, he never appeared to be in it for the long haul and never seem committed to the company, only to himself. He is not a nice person and I found him to be very rude and very lazy. Always criticizing long tenured CA people as “worthless”, let me not list all his hired and friends that fizzled out and hurt the company. Too many to name and not fair to them to use names. I simply feel bad for all the CA people that will have personal challenges due to his lack of conviction. I have no idea who Hock is. I won’t be working at Broadcom but get the feeling from what I am hearing in the halls and on internal message boards that he actually does show up for work and is dedicated to his company.

From the beginning the bike boy idea was to sell off CA. One more thing GDL is doing what the company asked him. Remember he is not God.... :-)

I agree with whoever said Gregoire was the worst CEO in our history. And remember, we've had one who went to prison.

Interesting.

The problem at CA is that most of the GMs couldn’t grow their business to save themselves. Many of them will be divested. I agree there will always be buyers.

Thank you for this post. It is very helpful. I’m a VP at CA that will be cut and I am thankful to get a severance. Hock sounds like a great CEO that understands the business and rewards strong performance. Unlike the current CEO that doesn’t even know my name let alone what I do for the company. I’ve met him several times and he has no idea who I am. He will go down as the worst CEO in our history, not because he didn’t know me, but because he was never committed and didn’t deliver on any of the goals he set for the company. Hock may be a micromanager but at least he is committed and practices what he preaches. Our CEO “no one can work from home any more” - except for me and my elite executives. My favorite “I’ve never looked at a badge report”, please just post yours at your discretion, pick any week where you showed up at the office for 5 days in a row. I’ll wait...

8) Oh, he will push the sale teams very hard. He used to run a small silicon company with average products. He knocks on doors of Cisco, HP and etc etc and get turned down all the time. If you are an engineer, he will try to get the full value of your work. If you are a sales guy ( I am not in sales), I think he will motivate you to do that.
