Thread regarding Meijer layoffs

Never assume your job is safe

It’s been a year since the first 70 employees were effected at Meijer and ten months since the Infrastructure team was outsourced and another 100 were fired due to “restructuring”. The sad thing is that I didn’t put the clues together when they ramped up IT hiring with new graduates and those with minimal experience. I should have seen it coming, but I had great annual reviews and was rewarded financially. But apparently that made me a liability rather than an asset. I have to make a conscious decision every day not to be bitter. Being in my late fifties, I had a very hard time finding a new position as ageism is thriving in West Michigan. The moral of the story is never assume your job is safe just because you’re recognized as a peak performer.

I worked there about 10 years ago and I knew there was something deeply wrong when they were cutting hours and hiring people for "union" positions. Very oxymoronish.

You are absolutely right. These companies outsource to the lowest cost providers and basically end up with higher costs and employees who are not "invested" in the company because they are not employees. They also never achieve the stated results, because IT was never the problem to begin with. If IT is a problem, look higher in the leadership chain of command.

Meijer is hurting because it’s much smaller than Walmart and that giant Amazon
