Heard that fat layoff packages aren't going to happen anymore.

Severance packages, if you are an employee, are typically 3 to 4 months of your salary plus your pension and what not. I am not sure if that is less then what was provided during the other rounds of mass layoff. As a contractor, they have paid an additional two weeks of work upon lay off.

For God’s sake, don’t think you can get away with being “right,” you lowly peon. Even when you KNOW something is wrong, don’t go thinking you can offend your manager’s fragile little ego by pointing it out. If you do, they’ Lay you off.

But, hey, wait. Isn’t that what caused the Marshall spill to get so wildly out of control ? Didn’t some lowly peon in the control centre voice her concerns to her boss only to have them dismissed.

Seems to me there’s a lot of value in creating a culture in which employees feel they can speak up without fear of getting laid off. Probably just me, though.

Oh for sure, your relationship with your manager is everything when it comes to these layoffs. Technical proficiency will not save you if you are hard to work with, or are perceived to be making life more difficult for your people leader and those around you. The mistake many seem to be making is getting really hung-up on being “right” and making a point when they find an issue with some of the org changes. While these people are often completely correct, they never get the justice, recognition, or apology they want and end up continuing their crusade right out the door. When you get to that point, the better move is probably to keep your feedback to yourself & trusted friends, or leave on your own. It’s super annoying to have to work with these people while they self-destruct, although I often totally understand & agree with their concerns.

When it comes to keeping your job at Enbridge, nothing matters but whether or not your bosses like you. Your qualifications don’t matter, the quality of your work doesn’t matter and the criteria that the Bain consultants come up with don’t matter. If your bosses like you, they’ll lay off someone other than you.

Layoff choices are ALWAYS personal. When I consider the cases of each and every employee who has been laid off over the last four years, at whatever level, in every instance: 1) These individuals were disliked for some reason by their immediate PL or by the person to whom the PLs reported, 2) They didn’t have a “protector” at the right level who could advocate for them.

I don’t know of a single case where a layoff decision was about performance, skills or actual need. Layoff decisions are always personal, and about whether or not you are liked by the managers in charge.

Doesn’t matter to the ELT at all. In fact, they enjoy it. Layoffs give them, and the VPs who report to them, an opportunity to eliminate the employees they hate. Their choices of whom to lay off are always personal. If you want to stay, get busy ingratiating yourself.

It truely is sad to watch a company self destruct. Even if stock manages a temporary rebound and the board of directors is satisfied for one more quarter or one more year, the number of families that have been affected by the past four years of misdirection, will never show up in a spreadsheet column. It is like watching a train wreck and being helpless to affect the outcome. Hang on and hope to avoid becoming another statistic, or jump ship and salvage your career before you become a casualty, It really doesn't matter either way to the ELT. If it did, they would actively work to put an end to the chaos of uncertainty. It is not possible to sustain an organization when you refuse to give employees any positive reason to motivate them to pour heart and soul into the future.

You can see the voluntary turnover rate on the “Gender Dashboard” they have on Yammer. It’s not crazy company-wide, but some business units are pretty bad... and based on few couple minutes of looking at past dashboards, I was able to see some some patterns. The other interesting thing is that women are leaving voluntarily at a much higher rate then men. I looked into this online, and it sounds like women tend to be less tolerant of toxic workplaces and are less motivated by pay and other traditional benefits... so yup, makes sense.

I heard a good number of people are looking somewhere else and ready to jump ship if there is an opportunity. Some are even openly saying it. Loyalty in this company is a moot point. Integrity sounds like a motherhood statement and you won’t feel respect when you know you are like a “doormat” to leadership. There are some entitled and arrogant workers but for those who are honest and hard working staff, the situation seems to be making the job a “dead end” one. It is not easy to jump ship especially for those who already had 10 or 20 yrs of service but this year I heard of at least 4 managers across Canada who left for better opportunities. Some are burnt out already and on the verge of quitting but they need to bring home money for their families. I had seen at least 2 dozens employees and contractors left on our unit for the last 2 yrs.

My manager keeps talking to me about sticking it out and not giving up. But I know she's only saying that for her and the company's benefit, and not mine. It's not like there's a promotion or raise in it for me if I stay. Leadership just wants the work to get done and doesn't care that it's burning out good people. People who could be turned loyal if leaders cared about teesting them better. There's no incentive to be employed here anymore.

Bullying is rewarded. If you’re not bullying someone, you’re viewed as being weak and certainly not leadership material.

The employees who, by nature, are just not able to bully others, or even stand up for themselves, simply withdraw. Eventually, they get laid off.

I have seen some employees pretending to be always busy but actually doing online shopping for hours and hours. You don’t have to be a “model” employee but I doubt others being honest about the actual time they had worked. I even heard someone sleeping on his desk LOL. Some are quiet because somehow they lost their soul and went along for the ride to make more money. I almost spit out the water I am drinking when my people leader mentioned that my contractor colleague is working hard and almost camping at the office. What my people leader doesn’t know is my coworker shows up at 9am and leaves at 5pm and the rest of the 10-12 hrs charge is “work from home”. What my people leader also doesn’t know is my coworker study on her desk during office hours and my coworker is a contractor. I didn’t know that contractor has that benefits. The system had somehow corrupted some people. I am seeing more disengaged, dishonest and fake people these days. Not sure if anyone is genuinely happy working for this company if not just for the money.

Yeah, I am in the same boat with Union Gas. Working for UG has been great and living in Chatham limits other opportunities locally, but I’m too early in my career to accept working for Enbridge if things are as bad as I think they will be. I get the feeling management doesn’t realize their high performers are poised to leave. Nobody likes these sh--ty titles and extra 30 mins unpaid, but it’s a company of nice people so instead of complaining, people are just quietly researching other opportunities and preparing to bail out. For many fields, other utilities are desperate for people with energy experience, so I don’t know where Enbridge got the balls to treat us like sh--. I fully expect they will do to Union Gas what they did to baby ducks in Marshall.

I’m at Union Gas and am waiting to see what happens with the “amalgamation” with EGD. I would be surprised if I get laid off... more a question of whether or not the new company is a place I’ll want to work. Union Gas has historically been an awesome work environment, so I’m reluctant to leave just yet.... but unfortunately, everything I’ve seen and heard from Enbridge so far is a giant turn-off... especially stuff that I’ve heard directly from EGD employees... it sounds like a nightmare of cat fights and egos over there.

So, I want to be ready to jump ship immediately if things start to go south. I had a real estate agent come by to see how much I could list it for and get some advice about what upgrades I should make in the event I need to move to take a new job, and she said lots of Union Gas people have been contacting her lately for the same thing.

I was laid off last year, took my awesome severance package, and found a better job. Enbridge isn't the only employer around, and although I miss the people I used to work with, I moved on.

I left a couple of months ago by my terms and I couldn't be happier. It's nice to know I have a stable job and no more worries about the axe coming down to get me. Also I must say I really don't miss those horrible emails about "harmonization" and "people leaders", give me a break...

After six years with Enbridge I took an offer with another company and have not looked back. When I joined Legacy Enbridge (Downtown Houston) It was a great place, great people, great location and 98% of the managers were actually engaged. Come on, Terry McGill was part of the band, preferred Hawaiian shirts and always made you feel part of a grander scale.

Four months ago, I left 5400 Westheimer for the final time and have not looked backed. Leaving Enbridge was a Blessing that I am truly grateful for. I felt a weight had been lifted and I am finally back to my old self. Devoid of worry, will I have a job and I am back to being fully engaged at the Office (it’s a great feeling). Although, many fantastic people left before me, it is the people left behind that my hearts will always ache for.

The good news is, before leaving I embraced the power of Prayer which is what kept me a float my last year or so and a HUGE Kudos to Enbridge for that!

I’m looking. There’s a lot of postings now that the oil price has increased. In general though I think morale has improved a bit. Lots of career stagnation going on. No pay increases so other sectors look good.

Just remember the only person looking out for you, is you. Your leader only cares about them looking good.
