While an investigative article will always be stronger with named sources, I will rely on information from people who don't want to be named if they make their identity known to me and their information checks out. I will not disclose to anyone the identity of a source who wants confidentiality. Also, I would rather not get a story than hurt someone's life or career, so I never push anyone to go public with their identity or even their information if the information could readily be traced to them. And generally I will advise people of other available options for their info -- I can connect them to reporters for major media outlets, they can go to a legislator or government agency, they can consider filing a lawsuit, etc. I just want the truth out there, better higher ed options for students, taxpayers, and employees. and con artists taken off the field, and it doesn't matter to me how it's done or who gets the credit.
Who is DH?
If I were you I would talk to DH and he'll keep you anonymous. But I wouldn't ID myself for just a news story, however. I'd save that for a huge $$$ whistleblower lawsuit or congressional testimony, like oh so many have done in the past against this company.
