Thread regarding Viacom Inc. layoffs

Stop hiring amid layoffs!

I was hired by Viacom less than six months ago and two weeks ago I was laid off. At the time I had two offers, and I decided to go with Viacom because it seemed to be the "safer" option. Boy, what an id--t I've been.

Now can somebody please explain to me why would a company hire somebody just to lay them off a few months later? What exactly is the point?

Viacom is notorious for layoffs. Everyone who works there knows it. I used to work there. They are also notorious for hiring contract employees to avoid paying benefits.

Actually I do know someone in the Franklin office that was hired directly back in October, and her last day will be August 15. So she will only get to be with the company for nine months. Given this information, I believe the initial post. Viacom is the type of company that will hire someone thinking they need them and then a few months later change their minds.

I honestly dont think hr depts communicate between hiring and layoff and (re)hiring. I have seen numerous people laid off with significant severence, only to be hired back after the payout is over. It's odd.
