I received 1 week of severance for every year I worked there - but yes, i did have to sign the release form and yes, the decision was mine to do so. More of your destiny is in your own hands - just be smart about it - I was and will be taking my $$$ and moving on!
I told folks severance shouldn't be expected and I folks crucified me. Sorry for being a realist!
Nothing to get d--k over. Just realize you are nothing but a broken cog in a rusty wheel and it all makes sense. Then you can rest easy.
