Thread regarding Sears layoffs

So it looks like the "retail is dying" excuse is no longer valid

It's just us and a few more companies. the rest are doing just fine.

According to new research from IHL Group, North American retailers will open 12,663 stores and close 8,828 stores in 2018, for a net increase of 3,835 store locations. The report found that a handful of retailers — 16 companies — represented 66% of the total number of store closings. For restaurants, 16 companies represented 74% of all net closings.

Retail is not failing, SHC is failing. Many of the old malls and strip malls are closing so that developers can redevelop and increase the tax base. In some cities and towns the population has changed so the retail needs change. Simple economics.

Streamwood, IL here....well, they just tore down an entire outlet mall down the highway from our house. The regional malls near us are lucky if they have a Burlington Coat Factory or a Kohls, as JC Penney, Sears, Carson's and their affiliates like Bergners, Lord and Taylor, even Macy's have pulled -out leaving them like a ghost town. Nearer to home, we have vacant big box locations that seem to have little chance of being reoccupied, and random stores of lesser size vacant for as long as fifteen years peppering the area. An older strip mall in our town has one occupied storefront out of a dozen, and from lack of renters, the owners have let the place go to pot, with a crumbling parking lot and faded facade. There are some success stories like Goodwill thrift store expansion and some fully leased strip malls that have more entertainment venues than retail. Often store footage has to be split to accommodate smaller establishments as the demand for a large retail footprint has plummeted.

Perhaps. This compares number of locations. I'd like to see square footage myself. One Sears replaced by one Dollar General or Starbucks wouldn't be too impressive.
