DCEH Get Rid of AIP-OD Administration

Dear DCEH

If you are serious about going all online- please get rid of the currently AIP-OD administrators especially the Dean of Online Programs. She has no understanding of what makes a successful online program. Instead of recognizing faculty who achieve high student ratings and above average retention rates for their classes she accuses and demeans faculty with continual threats related to her petty policies that haven't achieve success in the last ten years.

Just look at the online programs retention rates over the past 8 or 10 years and compare them to the retention rates of individual faculty and you will see where the real problem. Over the years I have seen faculty win retention awards and be laid off a year later.

Get rid of the existing AIP-OD administration if you want a chance at a successful online program.

For those considering teaching online you should read this discussion thread, 100% accurate representation of teaching at AiO and AUO (except AUO is 8 or 16 week semester, pays 25% higher, depends on the class).

Classes are only 5 1/2 weeks to start with and frequently students are added after the first week ends and into day 2 or 3 of the second week. Teachers are expected to stop everything, accept late work, and help a student complete the online class when they’ve already missed 20% of it. Most online classes have 3-4 assignments each week, late adds are expecting to be given special treatment and teachers have to check the class daily to make sure they do not miss any student posts, call the student and work with them one on one to complete the class. Admissions is forced to enroll them and teachers have to make sure they stay entertained and engaged.

It has been said before, this is an unethical school with unethical recruiting and scheduling practices and they prove daily that they don’t care about the students or employees, but they do care about getting the student’s money.

If you are thinking about taking a teaching job at AiO you need to know what you’re getting into.

If you’re a student, or parent of a student, show some common sense and enroll at a community college or state school, you will get a solid education and save 75% on tuition.

Anyone considering teaching part time online, make sure you know what you are responsible for when you accept a class. The pay is $1,500 a class which is less than what I make per credit hour at a community college. I know, you can work from home, but when classes have new students or 20-24 students it takes 15 hours or more for a class each week. The classes are 5 1/2 weeks long compared to 16 weeks, but I still spend 2 times the amount of time in a class online than at the college. I do have to shower, get dressed and commute to the CC, but still only spend 9-10 hours weekly including commute and just 2 days a week on campus. If they had more classes for me I would gladly take them. At AiO you are required to check classes 5 days a week and grade assignments within 48 hours. Plan on giving up part of a Saturday or a Sunday every week, or do what I do and check classes daily, being in the class every day makes it easier to catch projects that were turned in late.

We were just told that the AiO dean is requiring us to call every student who is late or has 72% or lower grade and they gave us each access to an app we can use to make VoIP calls instead of using a personal number, that is a very nice perk. We have always had to call students, we did have to call every one of them week 1 for a while, but they changed that rule. I have had to use my personal number for calling students and always worried about it. A lot of students turn in assignments 1-2 days late and if you grade the way you were graded in college, few would have over a C-. Calling students is just a part of the job.

All faculty have to have 12 hours of continuing education annually, that may be easy for some, but not always easy to get to it with work, family and teaching. AiO offers some classes, but they were not relevant to what I teach. I found a few online continuing education classes, they were not cheap and there is no reimbursement for adjuncts.

You are also responsible for your own laptop and software. I didn’t know about the software when they gave me the first class, thankfully the CC had the software and told me I could use it, but it didn't work with the examples in the class, I had to find an older version of the software, the AiO class was not using the latest update. Be prepared to teach students software, not just the one for the class but Word, Excel, and anything else you might use day to day, even how to use the online classroom and Internet Explorer. Some students try and use an iPad, they are the most difficult to help. I was told all students take a class on how to work online, but I am not sure what is in that class. About a year ago I heard classes were being rewritten and updated, but none of the freshman or sophomore classes I teach have been updated.

It is not a bad job if you have the time and extra money up front to get started. It’s not for everyone, you have to be patient and willing to relax your standards so a majority of students can pass a class. AiO students probably are not competing with other college graduates, they just need enough knowledge and a started portfolio to get an entry level job.

How you know you boss s---s:

I’d also add when they blatantly lie during a meeting about campuses that will remain open continuing to offer full degree programs. Guess everyone saying remaining campuses will switch to offering vocational software trading are just wrong. LOL

All administrators of AiPOD need to go - DCEH -- they know nothing about business - they frankly know nothing about teaching -- faculty are drone workers and expendable as far as they are concerned. We could go on an on about their busy work strategies and senseless decisions that make them look important. Most are not qualified for their positions -- DCEH -- you will save a ton of money.

Get Rid of AIP-OD Administration?

If they plan to continue AiO past December 2018, that is a must.

It needs to start with the VP online, the dean is just a manager doing what she is told. Her assistants acting as department chairs are not necessary, department management is left to the lead faculty (if you’re not familiar with leads they do what online program directors did until they were all let go in 2016).

The online classes are a joke, no real college level content, they are becoming a series of videos and interactive graphics, the curriculum “expert” needs to be fired too. It is turning into entertainment not education.

The funny thing about all of this is how everyone got duped by EDMC. The execs at EDMC got 60 million from Dream Center for totally worthless schools and divvied up the money on Golden Parachutes until there was only 50,000 left. Then EDMC claims bankruptcy because they only have 50 thousand dollars in assets against 500 million worth of debt. Dream Center finds out the schools are totally worthless because they have no accreditation and are scrambling to shut them down. And people say the executives at EDMC are idiots, sounds to me they are geniuses.
