Closed School Discharge Highly Unlikely

Please stop giving students that might be reading this bad information about Closed School Discharges.

The likelihood of such plan in the way that DCEH is doing these closures is very slim to qualify for a discharge. If all the campuses had closed and locked their doors last week like ITT did, then yes... easy discharge. But the tuition reduction plan or $5000 credit is a work around so that students won't be getting a discharge.

If my school closes and I then enroll (either through a teach-out plan or by transferring academic credits or hours earned from the closed school) in a comparable program at another school for the purpose of completing the program for which a loan was made at the closed school, can I still receive a discharge?

No, not if you completed or are in the process of completing a comparable program of study.

It has literally nothing to do with online still being open. If an individual campus closes you are eligible for a discharge. As soon as you sign a teachout or transfer you are no longer eligible.

I agree that students should look at it as an option but be prepared that it won't be followed through according to federal law.

I'm someone that should have been eligible for a public service discharge of my federal loans (long story on life outside Ai) but anyone following that knows that DeVos is looking for any way possible to kill that. I'm really glad I chose a different path due to the pittance I was receiving in take home pay relative to cost of living and didn't suffer as a sacrifice.

Agree that it is risky but they should also be aware that it is a possibility because I am not sure it is impossible. The discharge notice reads that entire institution does NOT have to close. If they are NOT transferring to complete a degree somewhere else then they should know that dropping out more than 120 days prior to the official close would automatically preclude them from this. The availability of the online finish does make it questionable. Horrible that have to make the decisions without a clear answer.

The HCL schools have a much better chance at Borrowers Defense to Repayment.

The only way I can see how it would be dischargable is if a student chooses a completely different major at a different and unrelated school
