Maybe no merit increase but consider this, you might actually get to keep your job a little longer.

Instead of announcing that they would be giving merit increases, maybe they should have said something like, "There will be NO across the board raises this year. There may be spot adjustments or some merit increases, but it's important that everyone adjust their expectations that there will be NO across the board raises."....or maybe say NOTHING.
Not everyone will get a raise. And they shouldn’t. There are still lots of fat cats laying around who are good but make way to much money . Getting 5,6,7-8 % or more is rout of the question. You are out of touch if you think the “raises” will be big or that everyone will get them .
