Thread regarding Staples Inc. layoffs

The narrative is in jeopardy

The common refrain from the trolls here has been that CP wants to gut the company and sell the scraps. The other theme is that CP doesn't give a damn about the contract business. Given the news this morning, that narrative is full of holes. Look for the trolls to scamble to develop another gloom and doom fable in short order.

The move is to purchase Essendant and expand the b2b network.

Is the move on Essendant a tactic to put pressure on WB Mason to sell to Staples and expand the b2b biz?

It appears to be a desperation move. Sycamore once again low balls the true worth. Then, explodes the company. Sick. The jones group - Talbots ring a bell? Scumbags

I love the use of the word "period" on this board. People with no clue about the strategies being discussed think that putting the word period at the end of the sentence will make others believe their horse sh--.

S.P. Richards has 5,200 resellers and distributors throughout the United States and Canada from a network of 60 distribution centers.

The key here is "resellers"... redistribution. You do not need an outside sales force of significant numbers when you are in the redistribution business.

If this was to become reality, you can kiss most of the internal and external jobs at Sycamore/Staples goodbye.

Looks like they are attempting to consider modeling themselves after a Grainger.

Grainger is way ahead on this game and Staples/Sycamore will remain in the dust.

Motion Industries is part of this target also.... again, they will NOT compete with Grainger - period

That was never the narrative.

The narrative is that Sycamore will wind down retail operations and re-emerge as a B2B company, which this latest action falls in line with.

Remember, the contract division is a bunch of merged and acquired B2B companies. Staples never wholly owned or "created" its contract division. This latest move is simply tie up loose ends.

It's still bad news for employees, though, as they're still being laid off to make room for future-acquired business units.
