Thread regarding CA Technologies (CA Inc.) layoffs

I'm terminated!

Just as a buddy in support was messing me about the lay-offs my boss sent me a web ex invite.

As soon as I joined the call I knew something was up, he sounded like he was at his own funeral.

His next words where... "I have X from the people team on the bridge also"... followed by... "I am sure you saw the town hall last week, as part of the changes your position has been eliminated"

The girl from HR then took over and explained severance, ect. CA is very generous with severance packages. 5 years services will get you about 20,000 USD - 15,000 USD after tax.

Access to systems is terminated at 5pm that day. They send you a box to return the CA laptop. You can keep your cellphone, screens any other stuff.

I was placed on a PIP (Performance improvement plan) because of low billable hours but was removed from the PIP a month ago. I think the decision is based on your profit for the company. If you have been sick, taking time off, unable to meet a quota... watch your back.

I think the lay-offs take place on pay days between 3 and 4 pm. Mine took place on the 15th, so another wave could come on the 31st. I'm sure after that the chaos will die down - they are only laying-off 800.

Probably the most efficient process within CA that i have seen in my 15+ years with the company was their termination process. you get the phone call, by the end of the phone call you have your paperwork, the next day boxes show up at your home for equipment, and your logon Id is turned off at midnight.

Just think about how the company could grow if they were as efficient in building great software as they were in laying people off.

FWIW, they did you a favor taking you off the PIP. If you were on a PIP, they could have pushed that through and given you no severance as a result. The situation s---s though and I'm sorry you had to go through that. For everyone speculating about the cost of the layoffs, I believe the CFO said they had set aside between $140-160 million for the effort this year.

Yes they include acquired time from your previous company in the severance calculation which is better than the last company I worked for where they didn't

For years of CA service --> weeks of severance pay, do they count your time with any acquired company as well? Anyone know?

Severance costs in Europe are considerly higher than the US. If they really are terminating people that have been around a long time, those people are probably getting a full year of salary based on their time with CA. Because this is a large RIf they will not be able to wheel and deal with you so I wouldn’t bother asking for anything because they can’t give it to you. Not like they would even if they could. Take the money and find a better job with better job security. They are out there.

CA sev policy has not changed in years.. only minor tweaks here and there. 2 weeks of pay for every FULL year of service has been standard. 5 years of service is 10 weeks of pay. Considering that this action will cost 90m in non-facility costs to exit 800 people (112k per person) I would say you should try to see about getting more. Try asking for a 6 month COBRA stipend. Good luck
