Thread regarding GE Digital layoffs

No amount of talent will safeguard you from layoffs

"Relax, if you're talented you're going to be just fine."

Really!!?? I worked for GE over 17 years and I can tell you several times where many of our best people were let go. In one instance, many were let go only based on the location they worked from. There was no consideration given to "performance". We lost over 90 of our best team members do to that stunt!

People that were told they were not at a strategic location and in one example, there was one person that worked in an office a few blocks away from an office that was considered strategic, and they were told they couldn't go to that office instead.

That was ONE example of many over my years. So for you to make this statement, means your either new to GE, Senior/Executive leadership at GE, or you have been hiding a rock!

Wasn't Drumstick the one who wanted to live in Miami so they made it a strategic location? What next, Key West is a strategic location? So many technological advances have come out of southern florida in the last decade.

Talent or merit will not exempt you from a layoff. Agree that it’s a terrible strategy and sends the wrong message to layoff by location or group. I have observed that all or most of the talented people I’ve seen layed off turned around and got better paying and more interesting jobs. The people left at GE forced to do more with less openly wonder why they’re still there, putting up with the management ‘course corrections’ and other cr*p.

Then nobody cares anymore because meritocracy is dead. Death spiral.

Agreed completely. There is no individual merit used when making these decisions.

The DT leadership is too lazy, chicken sh_t and unwillingness to do the right thing for the people. HR is at fault too to let it happened!. There is no leadership at DT. A smart company would always trim the workforce by releasing your low performers and/or low seniority 1st. This has least implication to the people and sending the right message - it pays to stay and perform well. Site Strategy is easy way to cut costs and avoid legal ramifications but it send the wrong message - we don't really care how long you worked for GE with high performing track records, you are just # on the book. These are short sighted decisions. GE will pay for these dumb decisions over time if it will survived. Jump ship now!

I have been with GE 18 years. I’ve seen a lot of talent get the boot. The only people that are safe, is if GE needs you. It doesn’t matter how talented you are. If you are in a GE Digital roll right now, you better be looking outside for a job.
