Thread regarding DST Systems layoffs

Advice from someone who went through a DST Layoff...

Sorry to hear that yet another round of layoffs happened last week. For those that are still employed by DST, let me give you a word of advice....

I worked for DST for almost 15 years and was part of the big layoff that happened in the fall of 2014 ( That's when they announced they were shutting down the Jefferson City office ). As one would expect, all of us went through the emotions some people are going through now. But you know what, life rolls on. In fact, for just about everyone the layoff turned out to be a good thing. For me.... a great thing.

I can't speak for 'business' positions, but as far as technical jobs are concerned DST hurt my career. I didn't realize how stagnant and out of date my skills were until I got a job with a company that's using current technology stacks. DST had alot of proprietary software that provided absolutely zero benefit outside of that company.

And as far as a company that 'cares' or 'appreciates' their employees.... DST is low on the list. Scratch that.... it wouldn't even make the list. There's too many other companies out there that treat employees with genuine appreciation.

I see many posts and comments wondering if there's going to be additional layoffs, etc. I don't understand how that could be a legitimate question. Of course there will be. Why do you think they're getting rid of several key employees? Key employees that have been there for years with a vast knowledge base of the systems they have? If they're going, who's going to replace that knowledge? If those employees, who've given alot of time and dedication over the years were let go ( granted with severance most likely ), why in the world would anybody that's not the top brass feel secure? It's the bottom line $$$. Period. Especially now with them getting bought out.

The best advice I can give for anybody who's still there is this.... Start looking. Period. Get your house in order. Get your resume updated, references lined out. Update your LinkedIn profile. Do you what you need to do to find a new place of employment. Will it be out of your comfort zone..most likely. Does it s---.... you bet. But it's alot easier to do these things now while you still have a paycheck coming in than if you were unemployed. Job hunting is stressful by itself. It's even worse when your living off savings because you don't have a steady income. This is your time to make a move. Because you can damn well bet that DST will force you to before too long.

For those that are keeping their fingers crossed hoping to 'ride' the storm out... You're the equivalent of a passenger on the Titanic hoping to make it to land before the ship sinks. That may sound like it's said in jest, but I mean it with all seriousness. Now is the time to move. Just think, everyone that's been laid off is now searching for jobs that probably WON'T be available 6 months, 2 years down the road when you'll need to find one.

One last thing.... the grass really IS greener on the other side of DST!

While I didn't get laid off, I did leave DST voluntarily last year for a position in a completely different industry.

He's right. LinkedIn is the place to be, especially if you're a technical person. I've seen five posts from recruiters this week trying to scoop up laid-off people, and my eventual exit from DST started with a posting from a recruiter.

I got a 15% raise moving to my new job and am happier than I've been in a decade. Don't wait for a severance that might never come. GTFO and find better, more fulfilling work.

I am not the OP. The boot camp folks should consider what skills they have that are still transferable, such as SQL.

What's your advice for people who came in on the Cobol bootcamps and don't have any other skills than what they've learned there? Has anyone upgraded their skills to a more current stack like .net or java? Seems like the Cobol people are S.O.L'ed.
