An Update on Our Transformation

Email just sent to the entire company; still not 100% who was included:

From: Eddie Lampert, Chairman and CEO

An Update on Our Transformation

As we work to advance our strategic transformation, we all know that we must return the company to profitability in order to retain the confidence of our constituents. This means continuing to look at ways to streamline our operations while staying focused on our Best Members, Best Categories and Best Stores.

Today, we made the very difficult decision to eliminate a number of positions across various business units and roles. While these changes didn't impact a large percentage of our workforce, your leadership team and I want you to know that these decisions were not taken lightly or easily. We are grateful for the contributions of these associates and we are committed to treating them with compassion and respect during this challenging time, including offering severance and outplacement assistance to make career transitions easier for all who are eligible.

Having co-workers and friends leave the organization is never easy, but making changes like these are a necessary part of creating a stronger organization in this time of industry disruption. We continue to fight every day to improve the performance of Sears Holdings — and you are central to that effort. I ask everyone to remain focused on the OKRs you set for the quarter as your goals can have a direct impact on our company’s transformation. By building meaningful relationships with our members — who look to us for our brands, our services and convenience — we can drive sales and put our company on the right path for the future.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Sears Holdings.

Truer words have never been spoken.

I heard this word transformation 2 years ago before I was sick of the Toxic environment at SHC. Still dont understand why Eddie continues to use this word. Its easier for the employees to digest i guess. But even the "members" on the street know its dying a slow death, and not going to transform into anything. I just pray that folks at corporate and at the stores see this as just another level of firings and get their resumes up to date and think of the future.

It's been that toxic for years. iT always had the number of cliques who took care of themselves. If you were an outsider, who wouldn't bow down to the leader, you were ostracized. Of all of the companies I've worked for, I've never seen a place as bad as sears.

I agree with the one poster who said "most toxic environment they ever worked in".... I was laid off on Tuesday and now that I have been away from there for 2 days , I feel better already. Working on old systems from 30 years ago with little documentation, managers who never read your status reports or give any feedback, no raises, no 401k match, no team spirit, people who work from home most of the time and never seen, walking around a campus that looks like a mausoleum, little training, I recall working for RCA service back in the 70's and the environment was very similar.... and they went bankrupt decades ago. I should have left Sears a couple years ago but hung on until retirement. I waited for the pension restriction to be lifted... I am getting my money out if it's the last thing I do.

What's the same letter that my boss got laid off with over 2 years ago all they do is change the lettering around and the date.

"Kmart may have had a chance if someone else besides Eddie Lampert took over the company"

Martha Stewart has commented that she had the opportunity and regretted not doing it.

@oed don't kid yourself, that transformation started in the 1970's and was an unstoppable snowball by the 1990's.

They published the exact same letter the day after I was laid off a year ago.

P.S. There will be more layoffs on 7/10, as was done last year.

If you are still at Sears and sh@tting yourself at the thought of being laid off, you will feel SO much better when you are finally gone. It's by far the most toxic environment I've ever worked in.

Eddie Lampert doesn't know anything about retail, or how to run a store or company for that matter. Eddies is a recluse and a sorry excuse for a human being. He never cared one bit for Kmart or Sears employees. Sears would have been long liquidated, and Kmart may have had a chance if someone else besides Eddie Lampert took over the company. The best thing that happened to me in my life is getting let go from Kmart; I was able to find employment that pays 4x what Kmart did, and appreciates the work that I do. I do miss my mangers and co-workers; at our store we treated each other with respect, something Eddie Lampert doesn't have!

My director called me at 3:58PM to tell me this would be my last day then handed me off to HR. I work out of a location in Texas, but report up to a leader in HE. So I'm not included in the HE headcount but I was definitely impacted today. "Stealth" firings--kind of like those under-the-radar store closings--are happening with each round of reductions. My hunch is that the REAL number of jobs lost today is probably 10-20% more than what they admit to.

At any rate, I'm glad it's over. Best of luck to everyone.

@dmr Also, the use of the euphemistic "impacted" makes it even more wrong. 10-15% of people at HE were laid off. But 100% of people at HE lost co-workers and will see their workloads increase to make up for it.

You could take this letter, copy everything, just change the date and publish every time there is a layoff, same old same old. When I got laid off today my director read similar verbiage off of an index card, then handed over to HR who seemed to be in a hurry to get me out of the conference room. Eddie has been at it since 2005 and we have not improved. Anyone else what that kind of record of failure would have been fired a long time ago ... unfortunately he practically owns the company.

"Today, we made the very difficult decision to eliminate a number of positions across various business units and roles. While these changes didn't impact a large percentage of our workforce,"

I love how that statement is deceitfully crafted. The percentage of layoffs affecting the HE associates was very substantial. However, by including the entire SHLD workforce in the equation, the consequence is portrayed as a mere trifle. Eddie's spin doctors must have worked overtime to create that chicanery.

There is no “transformation “. Just the slow liquidation until Eddie gets all of his ducks in a row.
