DST Systems Inc. announced Tuesday that it will lay off 6 percent of its worldwide workforce. The cuts come two months after the Kansas City-based financial tech company sold to SS&C Technologies Holdings Inc.
“Today, DST laid off approximately 6 percent of its worldwide workforce,” according to a statement attributed to SS&C CEO Bill Stone. “While difficult to part with many good people, it is a necessary step to improve customer satisfaction, create a more nimble organization and prepare for the future opportunities of our combined company. We moved swiftly and fairly and have provided generous severance benefits. We wish everyone well in their pursuit of new opportunities in this period of historically low unemployment.”
SS&C completed its $5.4 billion acquisition of DST in April.
DST ranked No. 7 on the Kansas City Business Journal’s 2017 list of the area’s Largest Private-Sector Employers, with 4,990 local full-time-equivalent employees.
The company, which provides data processing services for financial services and health care companies, had approximately 14,200 employees at the end of 2017, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Of that total, 7,500 were in the United States and 6,700 internationally.
That would put the size of the layoff at roughly 850.
The statement from Stone is the same as text from a memo to DST employees obtained by the Kansas City Business Journal. That memo, in the name of DST General Manager Mike Sleightholme, said that "in the days ahead, your leadership team will provide you with additional information about specific organizational changes."
It also said that the company would host a town hall meeting "very soon."
