Thread regarding DST Systems layoffs

Who will hire us?

Any idea where to turn for a job that would be similar in pay for those of us who are over fifty and most likely on the next list for layoffs?

Who out there hires older workers and pays them according to their experience and knowledge?

From what I was able to see, nobody. We are very much screwed.

For recent hires (1-5 years) working at DST is like a step back in time. Almost everything is outdated (processes, technologies, mentalities). If this is news to you, you’re in for a bit of a harsh reality check.

If you are over 50 and at a place with looming layoffs, you must be stupid. You've been reading the rumors, if you get cut and you're over 50, you only have yourself to blame for waiting and hoping they don't lay you off. You've all had plenty of time to look for another job.

If you don't get cut in this lay off, you'll be in the next one for sure if you are over 50.

well, if you have been at DST ( or anywhere for like 10 years or more ), be prepared for a DRASTICALLY different world of job hunting. It is both better and worse. Better because of the technology and tools at your disposal. Bad because it is at employers disposal too and they screen often 100s or even 1000s of applicants. I have been through it. Competition is tough. If you are a manager, forget it you will have almost impossible time ( seriously ). You will need to refresh skills and take something more focused. Software Developers/Engineers are holding the cards but only if your technical skills are very recent. This why I have been telling friends to get their butts in gear years ago. If you get laid off, pray your severance can last until you get a new job. It might...it may not. That is not because the market is bad, it is like I said - employers are frankly just wasting way too much time on applicants. It is frankly brutal. There are great opportunities though! It is just not a nice smile, nice resume and a firm handshake anymore that gets you hired.

Don't worry, be happy. And find those stock certificates to turn in. That $1,000 you clear will maybe help pay your water bills for the next year. If you are a DST Coaster, you will find life post-DST will not be kind. But hey, you were underpaid all these years and helped past execs get fat paydays so they can live out their lives in affluent comfort in their lake homes and treed enclaves in KC.

All you long timers should had been going to school to DST reimbursement, why wouldn't you. So if you've been at DST for many years you should had set yourself up to be in a good position to be let go.

Also, get on LinkedIn now and connect with everyone you know. I find out about job openings all the time this way. Don't wait until layoffs where there will be another 1,000 people competing for those jobs.

If all you know is DST's products, you will have a tough time.

If you've taken the time to learn Access, SQL, Confluence, Sharepoint, and products like that, your resume will stand out a bit more than some of the others. I got my post-DST job based on my ability to build websites using the web tools I learned building DSTConnect websites.

Most companies you apply with won't know what AWD and TA2000 are, but they will know Sharepoint and SQL, and those skills are in demand.

Everyone I know who is over 50 and who was ever laid off, wound up having to settle for a job they hated more for less pay.

Be careful what you wish for ...
