Explaining away missteps is how stay around in GE.

"You've got to remember, we created GE Digital in 2015, and we started selling these products in 2016, so we're really only in our third full year of operation,” Ruh tells Computerworld UK.

"We found that you have to focus. One example is we now focus more on our products' differentiation."

The centre piece to GE Digital's product portfolio is Predix, a software platform to create apps that manage industrial machines.

....

Then this ............

....

"We realised very early on that being in the data centre cloud business didn't make any sense, because you're in an arms race with Amazon and Microsoft and Google, who are spending billions and billions of dollars on data centres that you can't and shouldn’t produce," says Ruh.

The switch allowed GE engineers to concentrate on developing applications.

"We found ourselves focusing on two application areas - asset performance management and service automation - and really holding ourselves true to those areas. That's proven to be really effective, because we're really the leaders in those areas."

The 3 steps listed seem to be working very well in politics as well.

Maybe you should’ve realized that you couldn’t compete in cloud storage BEFORE you started building out data centers and buying equipment, you gas bag.

As a young person new to the workforce, the 3 most important lesson I have learned watching top US business and political leaders:

  1. MISLEAD THE PRESS. Lie constantly to the press, investors, and your employees (those that have no power over you), use white lies, and throw in a "big one" every now and then to get Twitter outraged. Reserve truth for your BoD.

  2. ENTERTAIN/LIE/BULLY. The CEOs job is not to build anything. It is to entertain investors/customers/potential acquirers at fancy meetings, and to entertain employees at conferences. It is also to bully those under them which is another form of entertainment/politics.

  3. Most important - LIE FINANCIALLY. DO NOT disclose accurate financial info (GE - "Digital Revenues", politics - tax returns). Leak small, misleading financial tidbits that show everything to be OK (one page of a 2003 tax return), or report non-GAAP financials.

If people can follow the money, they will be able to see through most of the lies you've built up around yourself that are necessary to run a successful (large) biz. And in today's world, PERCEPTION is much more important than SUBSTANCE when it comes to financial success.

The name 'GE Digital' may have only be layered on in 2015, but we started this journey in 2011 : this type of dubious claim makes me continue to doubt anything he says. We need honesty and leadership now more than ever.
