Midland: to stop the bleeding plug the hole

How many people have to leave the company before the EC will reverse course and bring their technical staff back from Midland and remove the fear of a looming transfer for those staff not moved?

I can't really blame the company for trying to eliminating people on the cheap. Let's face it, the cream of the crop has abandoned ship by now. What remains is the C squad. The hangers on.

Is that a real question? The options weren't given because that was their ploy to get people to quit. If they offered a job in Midland and you declined, they'd reduce headcount without paying severance. They didn't all of a sudden need hundreds of people in a Midland corporate office doing the same job they could do from The Woodlands.

So if you were relocated via ultimatum, congrats! They actually would have preferred you quit! But you got them. You sidestepped their bluff and took your below industry average paycheck to beautiful West Texas!

Career planning for those forced to move to midland (there was NO choice for some) and a rotation would have helped deter resignations. Also the option to commute. Either way they were spending the money why not give people the option instead?

Keep in mind each resignation represents ~$150k in lost relocation compensation only.

There are currently 10 positions posted in drilling, land, reservoir, and geosciences. This doesn’t account for the lag in posting positions for the most recent round of resignations.

It's interesting how the most poignant threads on this board get deleted. It's almost like the powers that be at APC have the moderator in their back pocket. I'll bet the Soy Boy monitors it 24 hours a day and tattles to the legal dept when there's a post too honest for his liking. They then send an email to the site administrator threatening legal action and poof, it's gone.

Midland was always a miserable place but at one time it did have most of the major oil companies represented with professional E&P staff and community in place. Had a minor league baseball team Rolls Royce and helicopter dealerships! Just sold my Mom’s house there a couple of months ago. They were a part of the early 80’s oil boom and after the crash were stuck (you see these old engineers all over the place doing things like hitting your car in a parking lot). Sold the house for way more than it was worth but 8 months ago it might not have sold at all. Buyer was glad to get it. Now Midland is new a blue collar well service town. Odessa is whatever is lower than that. Be thankful you could in Hobbs. Good luck guys, I never have to go back. Sorry to crash your thread but feel your pain….

From which disciplines exactly are they bleeding? Because it sure doesn’t seem like they’re hiring?

The last chance to move everyone back ended when we broke ground on our retarded new building... No way we back out now, we are balls deep in Midlandistan and won't right anything regardless of attrition or even oil crashing back to the high 20s. This will be a messy sh-- show with almost all technical staff hauling a-- as soon as the golden handcuffs come off. If you can stomach Midland there are a ton of jobs just down the street that pay more and probably don't care if you commute or maybe even do something normal like rotations instead of ruining 300 employees lives. The comical thing about this all is the EC thinks that they can throw a bag of $ and give a joke raise to folks and it'll all be hunky dory. Midland is a black hole which there is no escape sadly and APC will pay dearly for this epic lapse of judgement.

Employees are leaving at an alarming rate. Be aware of what your employee needs are. Sometimes it’s not about more money, but quality of life and better career planning. They left us out in Midland and say they are helping, but radio silence on the corporate end. Not to mention bullying many into going or to midland- Anadarko has lost its moral compass.

The problem is that you actually think you will be relocated out of Midland. We all thought that when we first took a position in Midland.... it won't happen. I even tried to go to Algeria and corporate blocked it. You're already there and its next to impossible to backfill your position. You're stuck if you stay with APC. Also, you won't sell that house for 140% because you won't leave on your own terms, but rather in the next downturn.

Asdfgerty9$73 hit the nail on the head. 100% spot on.

I see it differently, I’ll take the $75k bonus, 10% cost of living bump, and then make 40% on my home when I get relocated somewhere else. Sorry for you sour chaps collecting your unemployment checks since 2016 and spending your days on the layoff. You dinosaurs of the industry, your skills are no longer needed-but your not quite of retirement age either-caught in the no man’s land. Best of luck getting a caddy gig waiting in The Woodlands country club parking lot.

Cost of living in midland is not sustainable. Pocket change what they tried to give us out here. Schools are crap, no daycare availability, private schools have waiting lists so deep no one can get in, medical care is poor and waiting lists for Doctors, home prices are ridiculous and nothing to do here. Stores never have enough in stock or enough help. Quality of life in the office and out of the office are poor.

Anadarko has spent a small fortune sending people out here and then relocating them yet again back to the woodlands. Wouldn’t want to be here went it all crashes. Start looking for another company if you think Midland may be in your future. No amount of money is worth the misery Midland is.

I agree. You're stuck in Midland you poor b&%stard. Enjoy it. Embrace it. Get a less than tasteful tattoo. Buy a trailer. Try meth. Take out a loan you can't afford for a pickup truck you don't need. Maybe when you're done with your tour you can clean yourself up and write a book about the experience.

Let's face it, all the good folks have left. What remains is the chaff. Now Big Al just needs to go down with the ship and collect his golden parachute. It should be enough to finish the saltwater lagoon in his backyard, pay his country club dues for the rest of his golden years, and leave his little sh$#head kids with enough inheritance to ensure they never have to lift a finger.
