Repercussions of volunteering

Long time lurker, first time poster here. Didn't receive the "volunteers wanted" email (in key group for 5G success), however I am seriously considering it due to attractive package and a personal situation. I am however worried about the possible repercussions of such a move:

  1. In case my volunteering request is "not approved", worried about negative consequences about my future in the company. The volunteer email says disapproved cases will not be viewed negatively, but I find that hard to believe. Also, I have not really received that email, so technically there is no such "safe umbrella" promised to me. What are the thoughts on this?

  2. Planning to take 1-2 year off during this time (family reasons in home country). My end date with QC on my resume will reveal that I was affected by the mass layoff, which would imply I was someone dispensible. Nobody will know that I volunteered or I was a high performer. How much do you think this would impact my return to the competitive workplace?

I feel like I am overestimating the chances of getting serious useful insights/opinions on this forum, but crossing fingers to be surprised and receive for some feedback with substance...

OP here. Thanks for all the insights. I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of responses myself. After careful consideration, I've decided not to volunteer.

I think there are no right or wrong answers, you should do what fits your situation best. Volunteering during layoffs is a common practice a lot of people have taken and it shouldn't affect your future prospects.

  1. News of your volunteering will spread like wildlife as employees these days are interested in all sorts of information/gossips/rumors. This includes Sr. Staff managers. You can expect lesser responsibility, no promotion and lesser rating after that. If you are NOT one of those big shots that your departure will put dent in your team/module and your position can be filled up anyone else in couple months don't attempt this.

  2. Irrelevant. Next company/boss will be interested in what you bring on table for them and how you perform in interview. Mass layoff or volunteering ain't nobody gives sh--.

Correct. It all depends on how you convincingly communicate to your boss. I know couple of folks who walked out, on personal reasons, with the package just few weeks back even before anything started.

My personal opinion, talk to your manager about the personal situation, and inquire about volunteering. Make it VERY clear you have really been trying to avoid leaving Wualcomm. and what are the chances of rehire. Make us sound like a move of desperation, because I agree that unapproved volunteers will face negativity unless there is a situation like your’s.

For your resume, all you ha e to say is you left to attend to family responsibilities. The exact dates and circumstances of separation cannot be discussed by Qualcomm. It’s your story. If asked you can honestly say you resigned before the lay offs, because volunteering is like resigning with a perk.

OP - print your past rating and performance review to keep for future reference. There are always people who will be biased about people who got laid off - you just need to prove them otherwise by delivering awesome work on your next job. For those people seriously biased - you don't want to work for them anyways. Lastly, show QC it's their mistake to laid you off (if you are great ) by an amazing career afterward. Don't hire those jerks or bring those toxic culture into your next company. Good luck !

OP here. Thanks for the response. To clarify, 1 is applicable, since my decision to quit is contingent upon the severance package. I am planning to stay until at least the end of the year if my request is not approved, and possibly indefinitely if the pressing family issue resolves until then.

1 is not applicable as you have already decided to quit.

2 is not applicable because your chance of getting the next job depends more on your interview performance than the reasons you were affected by the layoff. For mass layoffs, most people know that it has nothing to do with your performance.
