Volunteering for Layoff not Fake news

Guys, this isn’t fake. Lots of groups received this email today. They want volunteers to notify their management by March 26 if interested. Thereafter the actual layoff begins mid April. May 21st seems to be the date by which people would leave.

Let’s brace ourselves.

Again, this is real news. Not fake. I myself received the email.

My dept was notified today. Only managers rcv'd it from a Director/VP. Middle managers spoke with each employee privately. Here's the o-so-wonderful bit about the voluntary separation: NO INCENTIVE FOR VOLUNTEERING. The separation package is EXACTLY THE SAME as if you were "involuntarily" laid off. So, what the heck?

How would Google know anything about how Qualcomm is handling restructuring and layoffs? That just doesn’t make any sense.

I think there are people who comment on here just to revel in our’s fear and unhappiness. Qualcomm employs really good people! People who have families depending on the paycheck. I do not understand how some people get off on hurting good people.

No one knows anything because Managers are struggling to keep as many as possible.

you can google too, but here is the definition - “The meaning of a voluntary reduction in force is when employees are selected in certain task areas and are allowed to volunteer for a layoff. The selected task areas will generally align with contract reductions.” Thus, those who have received the email, are from the groups where there is a reduction in force. Hence, start looking.

Nope, it is only being sent to groups that are not impacted, so that any voluntary separation can be factored into the layoff numbers of the groups that are impacted.

It is a cordial way to say that you better look elsewhere because we are laying you off in a couple of weeks. If I got the notice, I'll treat it as my last day and prepare for my next opportunity. Don't be a slacker if you received that note.

OP certainly isn’t trolling. I’m also in crd and have received the identical email OP refers to.

The dates are exact as per the email. I believe dates might be different for various groups however these are the ones as per the crd email from RP. CRD people should know who RP is.

I doubt they’ll get any volunteers though.

OP may or may not be trolling. Whether or not volunteers are sought or accepted is NOT a company-wide edict. It's up to the senior management (SVP or so) in your area. No doubt some will want to do all the choosing to get rid of dead wood. Others will seek (or just allow) volunteers.

Dates from the OP seem a bit off from what I know. My take is ~June 20 final date with the warn notice going out 60 days prior. Second wave in September from same warn notice. Those will be most likely some volunteers who's activities are considered more critical. Some will be leaving very quickly after the warn notice if they are thought to be IP theft risks.

I'm not a Qualcomm employee, but a shareholder. How can your company ask people to volunteer? Layoffs is about closing less business efficient programs, streamlining operations, not about an individual. If this news is true, you have some serious trouble coming from the shareholders.

What a bunch of Puzzy whiners! Several decades ago, a layoff would be no notice and no severance package. Go find another f**ing job with poorer benefits, equal or less pay. No WFH, NFW, OOO bullsit. Does anyone know what the final package is? Someone mentioned "severance + 2 weeks for every year/month/week you’ve been with QCom, and compensation for health care". Understand the 2 weeks per year, but what is the "+ severance"?

No invested stocks. No CIC, means no immediate vesting. What s---s is that the RSUs granted last Nov, none will be vested until 12 months later (which is this Nov), so they are useless if you are let go now. You are still being paid regularly until the layoff day. And you are supposed to work till your layoff day as well. After all we are being paid a salary to work.
