Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

How long do we have?

I know everybody here knows that DeVry's days are numbered, but what do you think how much longer do we have?

In all honesty, I think we'll be done within two years, if not even sooner. Such low number of students is completely unsustainable, and it's only a matter of time before it all comes crashing down.

I foolishly hung on hoping for a package that now won't come. I did, though, start a job search two years ago that is just now starting to bear fruit. I'll get my pound of flesh one way or another.

Chose to retire, poor, adjuncting. Still the best decision. No regrets.

And, when I was RIF'd two years ago, there was nothing at college or university for a professor who'd gotten beyond age 60 already, no matter how great the credentials :-( Even adjuncting part-time is hard to find :-( I was, however, sought out by EVERY insurance company in the world, so if anyone wants a new career in insurance, it's an easy one to get into. I chose to retire early....not ready to put my energy into building my own business when I was three years away from the retirement timing I'd planned. Wishing everyone well in whatever comes next :-)

I was RIF’ed almost 3 years ago, and at that time the teaching market was a bit better than today. Now there are very few F/T teaching positions, a PhD in the subject area and years of online teaching experience are required. Thanks to DeVry’s Golden Handcuffs, market pay is 25-30% less than DeVry. And the open positions are specialized. If you’ haven’t been seriously looking / applying by now, expect a long process. Or forgo professorships and change careers. There are many more out of work professors than there are positions.

I'm sure everyone is looking for work outside of DeVry--but, it's not an easy market, especially for college professors, and more especially for those who are over 50.

I don't think anyone is weighing options and choosing DeVry.

Please, for the sake of all that is good...read the comment boards for Corinthian and ITT. It will look very similar to this one. Many folks held on to hope for way too long and it didn't work out best for them. DeVry has a great deal of very good people and finding a good job will not be that difficult. I did a number of years back and it was the best thing I could have done. There is life after/outside of DeVry, and it is a pretty good life at that. In a few years from now, I will still be referring employees from troubled schools to read the comments from Corinthian, ITT and, unfortunately, DeVry.

Not sure, of course, but I expect that IF the deal with Cogswell goes through, there will be as many layoffs as are legally possible to occur as quickly as possible. I don't think the much referenced 2-year teach-out process is a legal definition.

I expect every possible protection of profit to operate as the primary motivation (as it always has) and for for the barest minimum of obedience to the law.

I give it 6 mos to a year, DeVry goes away, and Cogswell absorbs the infrastructure for its own purposes and goals.
