Highby Outdoors to the Rescue

http://www.ksidradio.com/news/details.cfm?clientid=37&id=263365#.WtKMwIjwaM8

It was Mr. Highby that grew Cabela's into an outdoors powerhouse company, and I think he can do it again.

What happened with this?

It would have happened even without Dennis' votes.

Marry Cabela's helps fund Highby outdoors and Dennis is one of the reasons Cabela's is gone. Does this seem ironic to anyone else?

Totally agree have seen a major portion of the CONUS and nothing I have experienced comes close to the real life version Hazard county!

Then they wonder why so many are putting Sidney to thier rearview mirror s.

Cutting thier losses and starting over else where

If you really think Sidney is that bad, you haven't seen enough of the world.

Tell me more about these paper airplanes.

Coupled with the singular myopic general attitude of a majority of the population of Sidney (the cess pool of the panhandle). This would be fun to watch to see where it goes.

THey are NOT faced by every company. Some yes, but the common denominator is top heavy and poor, out of touch management. Most companies in larger cities have issues, but nothing like the disconnected ones in small towns. 3 hours to an airport, primative tech infrastructure, lack of talent pool are just a few barriers. Ideas flow and are actually welcomed at most other companies...maybe not used, but listened to.

Cabelas still hand walked files around for goodness sake!!!

I would add...The problems faced reach well beyond the outdoor Industry. Look at Under Armour, Go Pro, Toys R Us...the list is long and growing.

Starting a business is a risk anywhere period. It will have its highs and trust me its fair share of lows.

I hope and pray with all my heart that every business in this town succeeds.

Those of us who are here are in it because we call this home and we have roots. We have families to support, bills to pay and talents to offer.

Change is here to stay from every aspect, every corner.

The best will learn from mistakes made and adjust.

To those with the fortitude to try....2 words...

God Bless!!

The poster didn’t call anyone small minded...all the time I lived in Sidney, the people are very resistant to change or moving along with the times. I saw this inside the workplace with the rejection of efficientcies, cost savings, time management etc...the town itself is poorly managed and the budgeting efforts are flawed and much of the money given to the town is wasted on things that are not practical. I also did t see any body on the thread say they wished the biz would fail, again, legitimate critiques were made. The town itself also cannot sustain another business coming in with a proven failed framework and closing down after employing the amount of people that the salary budget High y Outdoors has been given. It’s a fact, all comments on here have been factual, reasonable concerns. The people of Sidney need to actually look at themselves at this point and accept the flaws and mistakes made so it does not get repeated again.

You were on a fair roll until you started calling Sidney area residents small minded. Some? Sure. But such people are everywhere. Some people think NYC is the only place on Earth. There is nothing wrong in picking a place you love to be home. And to think that smart, talented people don't live and love here is simply...small minded. Let's just agree we want them to be successful, no matter what, and anyone else is an a--hole.

While i certainly hope this turns out well, there are people who are pointing out legit reasons on the downside of locating there. The people heading this are one of the reasons that began the fall of Cabelas. They are the head of the good ole boys network.

And agree that in the times we live in now, locating a corprate business in a town like Sidney (not saying Sidney itself...any town like Sidney) and the reasoning being to “take care of the town” is not good business and just plain dumb. Otherwise other companies would be doing it.

Just because you dont like whats being said, doesnt make it wrong. But hey, sidney is full of closed mindedness and any other opinion that doesnt match theirs is wrong.

A pretty quick google search will show you who setup the LLC:

and another quick search will show you who's calling them self the president on LinkedIn.

Totally agree with other reply - ask yourself how many Highby children and/or their spouses were employed in $100,000+/year jobs at Cabelas all because of their relation to the past CEO. Most lacked solid educations and true talent and experience to qualify for their positions, however they had the right pedigree and that's what mattered most. This new venture isn't the result of some creative Highby genius, it's just more of the same.

I doubt that this is the old man's venture. He's probably fronting the money to keep all of his family employed.
