Even if a new owner opts for the leaseback, it can't last long. As has been oft stated on this webpage, a store that has to start paying rent after decades of rent-free and mortgage-free operation will become much less profitable. And there aren't many, if any Sears stores, that can last long like that.

So in simple words, yes 15 stores closing. They might lease one back for good PR.

It plainly says it would be preferred to be a lease back not that it will have to be....

Potential investors are afforded a unique opportunity to acquire fee simple ownership and evaluate repositioning with sale-leaseback alternatives.

The sales will probably allow the new owner to toss out Sears on certain conditions

What will happen if there are no buyers?

@scu - Although the properties will be sold under lease back terms, there isn't anything mentioned that the properties will be required to remain under those terms. So you maybe the "dumb" one.

Why these stores, what did they have in common. NovI is a great store does well. Why did he pick these stores to auction? I think he is choosing stores with prime property. I know NovI is I don't know about the rest.

@scu Incorrect. Many have auto centers attached to them as well as the buyer can turn them into anything they desire. Not all are leased. I will be bidding on one area that I will turn into an apartment complex.

Read the article, they are all sold under LEASE BACK terms. The buyer has no choice but to lease back to sears. You guys are dumb.

@iun they are not selling the property to seritage. They are selling the property to the highest bidder whoever that may be. They will no longer be sears unless the highest bidder desires the lease money which is highly unlikely.

Do you honestly think that the new owners are going to keep a money-losing retail business like Sears going or are they going to put some of this actually profitable?

@SDCH4sO-kyf, deciding to run stores and pay rent rather than own in order to monetize some of their assets?

they’re just selling the property (to Seritage) not closing the stores. Look closer.

@SDCH4sO Well what else could it be you do you honestly think they're going to keep the Sears stores open?

Wow....that's a completely different way of looking at Sears online sales.

Does the stores being auctioned mean that they're closing?
