Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Palm Ventures

Palm Inc is out of business and Palm Ventures is not related to them. They are still in business. Does anyone think it’s strange they have not made any public announcements with the deal only be 3 months away?

Fed Up and Tired of Waiting

I'm sooooo with you. Can they just tell us already!!!! if we have to go, then let us go. Trying to hold on or making us believe, that our "Teach Values" are going to save of enrollment. Is so not fair....

This forum has sunk lower than the comments section in yahoo news.

I guess some people are right and we should all just assume that 0 companies would ever pay us about the same money again bc we worked at DVU. According to the layoff.com 100% of employers tear up DVU colleague applications.

DVU deserves more than criticism, don’t get me wrong, and finding new work may be excruciatingly difficult, but it is my humble, and clearly not shared opinion, that if DVU s---s this bad it is time to leave. Or at least keep trying to.

I guess I’m insane for thinking that way and should ignore the stories from people that have moved on from DVU, and just keep waiting for DVU to right their wrongs...

4 people left my dept in the last 3 months to work outside of DVU. Of course some of us will not have the same easy time finding work, but if your options are hope for the best at DVU, or not sleep and look for work, I’ll take the sleepless nights looking for work as many nights are sleepless from the anxiety built at DVU anyway.

Why we do stupid stuff

Compared with most animals, we humans engage in a host of behaviors that are destructive to our own kind and to ourselves. We lie, cheat and steal, carve ornamentations into our own bodies, stress out and kill ourselves, and of course kill others. Science has provided much insight into why an intelligent species seems so nasty, spiteful, self-destructive and hurtful. Inside you'll learn what researchers know about some of our most destructive behaviors.

We stress out

Stress can be deadly, raising the risk for heart problems and even cancer. Stress can lead to depression, which can lead to suicide — yet another destructive behavior that's uniquely human (and glaringly not on this list).

But exactly why we stress is difficult to pin down. These truths will resonate with many, however: The modern workplace is a source of significant stress for many people, as are children.

More than 600 million people around the world put in 48-hour-plus workweeks, according to the International Labor Organization. And advances in technology — smartphones and broadband Internet — mean a blurring of the lines between work and free time. About half of Americans bring work home, according to a recent study.

The stress of being a parent while also working is borne out by a 2007 study that found older people feel less stress. However, research in 2015 found high-stress jobs raise the risk of stroke, and stress can increase the risk of memory problems in older people.

Health experts suggest exercise and adequate sleep are two of the best ways to battle stress.

"The choice is always yours"?

It sure didn't feel that way in 2016 when they cut full-time faculty by 40% and left SO many dedicated, well-qualified people in their early 60's scrambling for what to do next when no one wanted to hire anyone nearing retirement age....losing a livelihood after most had committed 20+ years to helping students NEVER felt like a choice. Most of us had 20 years of prior experience in corporations and/or industry that served students with hands-on knowledge and applications to the world of work we hoped they would thrive in after graduation.

Changing to 8-week courses was the first death knell we kept desperately trying to ignore, despite being expert educators who were NEVER consulted or EVER listened to regarding student success. Perhaps we wanted to believe the lies we were told or held to the hope that the classroom was territory we controlled without interference where we could still make a difference for those who wanted to learn.

In the end, the greatest sadness is still students who will suffer most from too many empty promises made by too many greedy individuals they see in too many positions of power. We need not wonder why trust in bureaucracy and democracy is so distorted, dying, or already dead :-(

"The choice is always yours"

Yes, cut your salary by 3/4s and become a greeter for Home Depot--IF, that is, you can get a job with them.

Jobs aren't growing on trees for people living with families, mortgages, kids teeth, bills, bills, bills....but, yes, "the choice is always yours."

Your resume has a big stain on it, and while you continue to work at DeVry (what, 60-70 hours/week?), your time to spend looking for a new job is limited. So, you hang in by a blade of grass, you hope for a unicorn...

You aren’t alone in worrying @ Fed up, but why stand your ground and watch as the layoff express is always circling back around again?

DVU isn’t forcing anyone to stay. You just can’t go work at AdT lol. It’d be nice if they informed their colleagues better directly, instead of the highlights at the random town halls that spin the truth, and provide little useful information. That will never stop.

There are many on this forum that worked at DVU in recent years past, and did what was necessary to leave on their own terms.

DVU will give you at least decent pay and benefits, and expect unconditional loyalty in return. It may not be at all easy, but the choice is always yours.

Palm Inc and Palm Ventures were not the same company. Palm Inc developed the palm pilot and other handheld devices. Palm Ventures IS a venture capitalist firm and is in business. I too am wondering why they haven’t publicly announced anything in regards to the transfer. I suspect they are questioning whether this deal will go through. It also means they intend to cut deep and restructure or they would be easing everyone’s fears.

I am so tired of waiting to see if I will be employed or not! Is any one Else? I wonder if creating anxiety is part of Wardell's plan. It's really a form of cruel and unusual punishment!!

Palm, Inc. was an American company that specialized in manufacturing personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other electronics. Defunct July 1, 2010.

Palm Ventures LLC is an incubator and venture capital firm. The firm invests in both public and private companies.

The statement that Palm Ventures is out of business appears to have come from an article from Bloomberg:

https://www.bloomberg.com/research/stocks/private/snapshot.asp?privcapId=473136

Something seems odd about the article. The next sentence states it IS a venture capital investment arm of... Shouldn't it state it WAS if it was truly out of business???

I suspect a typo.

That's not what the post says. In fact it is just the opposite.
