More Store Closings?

Just wondering if there will be anymore store closings in Q1, I work in the Sacramento CA region and I heard store 0593 San Ramon was on the chopping block. Is that confirmed and is there any more California locations to be worried about going forward. I was recruited to come over to Staples from CVS. Just worried our store is next.

The San Ramon store has struggled for the last 3-4 years, that store use to be a 6 mil store. I called over there for a customer for a stock check and no one answered the phone. Finally got someone after 20 minutes. As they went to check on the product. I said sarcastically asked “you guys only 15 employees total employed in the store, you guys have no staff? No one answers the phone?” The guy said he has worked there for a very long time and he wishes he had 15 employees, that over the past 2 years it’s been closer to 10-12 employees and at the lowest it’s been 8. That they can’t even hire kids at $12 an hour. This guy even said he has closed the building with only one other person many times. He use to be MOD, copy center, tech associate, sales associate while he had only one cashier in the front of the store. Granted this has been almost a year ago, but I assume it hasn’t changed much since my phone call.

I actually asked my GM that yesterday. He said that our store layout is actually similar to the San Ramon store. That’s how San Ramon got brought up, Is 28,000 square feet a lot? We are close to the foot print of that store. That’s why I’m worried. I heard they make about 5 million a year, but they pay almost 60,000 in rent every month. We make about 5.5 million a year and our rent is in the high 40,000 range. Makes me nevous you know

There are closings planned. If your store performs poorly and its lease is up, its a target.
