Thread regarding VMware Inc. layoffs

It was only a matter of time... Tick/Tock

While working at VMware I scratched my head every time I would read the reviews on glassdoor.com. I didn't understand why the employees gave this company so much praise and loyalty! I only noticed one review that seemed accurate to me (IT SWEATSHOP). I worked there for a little over two years and then they brought in an incompetent manager from India with virtually zero people skills last May. At that point I pretty much knew my days were numbered. I worked my butt off for that company and got zero recognition from my peers or management. All I was told is you need to take on more work and support more products! I was frequently trying to provide good support while handling well over 30+ cases and it was impossible to get ahead!

When I signed up I was told VMware had a good work/life balance but that is FAR from the truth! They expect everything and then some out of you and show little appreciation.

I'll admit they did have good benefits and pay and provided nice perks like free snacks and tons of food for Bash Fridays which was always pretty cool. They also had good employees that were more than willing to help you out when you were stuck but the upper level support left a lot to be desired!

They decided to let me go at the end of last Summer and I wasn't even upset about it! I was actually relieved that I got out of that place when I did! Also, the day Dell acquired VMware I told myself this is eventually going to roll down hill and impact me or some other departments in the future. I didn't expect it to happen while the company was making tons of money and seeing record high profits but alas, that's how it played out.

I also told the senior manager when I being let go that "everything happens for a reason". He just looked at me perplexed and said.. What does that even mean.. Well, Karma + Cipher = 360.

So long.....

Unlike you, I did feel that VMW's WLB is second to none in the valley (at least for some team, you can literally not show up for work without sending notice, and no one would know), maybe that's why I didn't get out as early as I could have, out of appreciation for the beautiful, relatively sparse population and somewhat private work environment ( Facebook/Google actually scared me a bit, the way they shorten the distance among their employees, one time I saw lunch hour traffic at Facebook, I was like sweet fancy moses, that's lots of people, I do want personal space, even at work), and of course, the WLB.

But, the writing has been on the wall since Pat took over, annual/semi-annual layoff is the normal. That's just not the life I wanna lead. and I have hard time understanding how people can, after so many years, can still be taken by surprise when the guillotine gets to work. At least initially, Pat and cohorts pretended to give a damn, now I don't know it's pure antipathy or intentionally out of spite for the common folks, or maybe just pure coincidence, they tend to do something celebratory the day, or the next day after the layoff, one time, they organized a all-hands next day and spent hard of it congratulating themselves, ad nauseam, for the awesome job they did, I mean, come on, Trump has more sensibility than these people.

That's when I threw up my hands and decided to not play this game any more, and that's why I decided to be proactive, spent some time whipping myself into shape, got myself a new and better job.

And I suggest everyone at VMW do the same, I mean everyone. including those who mistakenly believe their product is "critical".

I do want to work for someone who at least pretends to give a sh**t. Seriously
