Are DMs next? Are they going to be laid off in 2018? We had a few threads on this now, I wanted to see what the wider community here on layoffs.com thought? Please chime in.

I’m a CSM at a Neighborhood market, had s meeting today and our decision needs to be by May 08,20.. if no job offer suits your needs your offered severance. Yes assistances dept managers, and csm, will be no more. Team leads, and academy trainers will take place. Here at NM, that means 1 lead and 2 a. t.. many jobs will go.. I’m sad!
I am glad I retired when I did. I have no regrets. I had to do processing, fitting room, register and jewelry dept plus put out merchandise. I was a lowly peon.
I've worked for the company 22 years. This what all my hard work commitment has come to. I'm scared
cool!!
I like changes
not to consitution but changes to working styles
I am a dept. manager over paint and hardware. I know I will be one that probably won't be one of the Team leads, because I've only been at Walmart since last Nov., but I've worked hard to get to where I'm at. God has a plan, I know. As far as the one who said Dept. Managers don't do anything, you need to be put there for at least a week. I go in and check the back room for freight that didn't get run, then I run it if there is any, then I scan my bins and pull any freight needing to go to the floor, then I run that freight. On Mondays I scan my deep out scan and run the report. If I missed anything I go back and scan it or count it if it is there, after making sure the right thing is in the spot, while waiting on customers. I work top stock to see if something can come down. On Tues, and Thurs we scan our features. We change out features, we order any features needed to fill endcaps that are getting weak. We scan top stock twice a week. On top of all that we do section work, in which the process is to scan the section location, make sure tags are in place, zone what needs to be zoned in that section, and that it is clean and fast track is okay. Then we continue with scanning the top stock to see if any needs to be put in the outs or can be brought down. If counts are off, we correct it. We fix what others have messed up in the process by taking tags off or flipping them and plugging it with stuff that they don't want to take the time and put up on the top stock. All of this why waiting on our customers. Dept. managers work hard... We love our customers and we want our departments to be nice. I'm scared that when they take the Dept. managers out of the departments that people aren't going to care what that department looks like and they are not going to be loved and taken care of. I just hope that the Team leaders take time to check on ALL of their departments since they will have several to watch over. I only have 2 and that is a lot of work with no one but me during the day. I have a friend who has 4 and she is always swamped. I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks we don't do anything should have to do what we DO.
Just had a meeting with my managers in the beginning of 2020 all department managers and assistant managers jobs Wil be obsolete, there going to a new structure that will acquire all of them to reapply for a new set of team leads, business leads and trainer positions, the jobs are limited and everyone won't have one, if you don't get one all ur hard work has been wasted as you'll lose your position and 10% of your pay and become a team associate peon. Really disappointed in the direction they are going. Sad but true guys, and if you don't believe it you wait and see. And if you can't find a position within 60 days in a store your gonna get the axe or boot. Sorry for the loss guys. I am saddened by it my self, I have worked hard.

Here is a quote fromSam Walton Made in America book: "Those who get greedy are going to be left in the dust.". This is from Sam Walton himself.
I'd really like to say thank you to Percy Wright. I enjoyed reading you're post. I trust God will take care of me no matter where I end up. He said, "Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Our store is going through the rumor mill about cutting the Dms in half and a lot of DMs are scared but I'm going to put my trust in the lord and I know everything will be okay. Good luck everyone, chins up at least we are still employed. =^_^=
When are department manager jobs being cut, I assume it’s soon.
I for one enjoy my job. It’s a big task having furniture and domestics, but I’m willing to continue the fight. I’m putting my trust in God. He said if you take one step, I’ll take the rest. If you’re not with the home office, making the new changes, then maybe you should keep, all the negative talk to yourself. Stop poor mouthing people, because things hasn’t worked out for you. Respect for the individual, goes a long way if you operate in it accordingly. I go in every morning saying, I’m gonna do my best at whatever task I have. I don’t have a sales associate, but I can’t let that stop me. He who fails to plan, plans to fail. That’s not an option for me. I trust in God.
I'm a department manager in a neighborhood market. My position, along with assistant managers, csms, and support managers , have been eliminated.
I've been with walmart 15 years.
They are going to teams. When the stocking is done, the stockers will break off into teams that do the rest.
Good luck with that
Thats what Aldi does.
I think that department managers will be reduced and bottom performers will find new roles on cap teams. I firmly believe (and quite feasible) that Walmart will reduce carryover costs of backroom inventory by enforcing inventory accuracy and reducing and depleting all backroom inventory. Trucks will be “truck to shelf”. Eliminate capping backrooms and excessive overstock, the job has been simplified. Reduce all stack bases, eliminate wow features, minimize end caps and replace with graphics, feature to home has been simplified. Walmart can reach out to me for more simplified ideas.
Robots and technology will replace ALL tasks that are repeatable and need precision..... something MOST DM's are not capable of. Eliminations will happen at ALL levels.... salary and hourly........good people will survive, slackers will be promoted to customer! ALL affected by this will be put in customer serving positions since over the years you have all lost that element caught up in your "work" and forgetting to meet-greet-thank EVERY customer you pass or passes you. THAT is the heart and culture of the company and what is missing when all the bleeding hearts on hear say, "Sam would be rolling in his grave"! He would for what you've all become. Welcome to the new world and a bigger and better company than you could ever fathom!
More associate ,assistant manager ,store manager ,complete of the store ,rid the department manager and support they just do nothing, just walk and talk, will be fair, they pay more do nothing lot of click not the work,
We used to have Cosmetics and HBA combined under one DM for some years but it was just not working out. It was too overwhelming and shrink went up a lot. Then they finally separated them and it got so much better, shrink went down and for the most part, they were on top of things.
They help each other out on their days off.
We never had two dept managers for wireless and electronics, we only had one doing both, so only change was them having photo lab now.
Yes, absolutely we're going to see some changes and consolidation in DMs. DBK has the right idea. However, It's going to depend on the store and the market they are in. For example, softlines in some markets do better (or worse) than other markets. You can't just make a blanket statement to say this is going to be combined to that. Somethings like HBA and cosmetics are just naturals, but maybe not everywhere.
So, yes - we're going to have some shuffling of DMs and alignment, but, the DMs are not going away. One thing for sure, though, departments that are having problems, or if you're down regularly, or if your inventory is whacked or more shrink than typical, you're days as a DM are numbered.
I suggest everyone at the stores spend some time with your store managers when they get back from YBM meeting and ask what the goals and objectives are for FY19. Believe me, they know.
Hope this helps.
He robot scanners will be in all stores by year end. They will do all section work and scan entire store every 24 hours. Stockers will work reports and topstock also. ALL DM gone by 2019.
I do think some DMs will be cut. There is also a lot of talk about Personnel being cut too.
19 year garden dept manager here. Definitely think consolidation will happen. Don't know how they would run there processes (cap bins, top stock , section work with all dept managers eliminated. I currently run garden and all the seasonal holidays. I guess they could demote us to sales associates and run the processes that way who knows. I am compensated very well but I have earned it over the years my level of work ethic has been consistent. That doesn't seem to matter anymore. Worried and scared about the changes
They will cut dept managers and give the rest more areas.
I could see some dept manager jobs being cut in the future for smaller depts and having someone manage multiple areas. Take a look at what they just did with getting rid of Wireless and having Electronics Dept Manager taking over. Just my take on it but next could be Cosmetics DM being eliminated and absorbed into HBA DM duties, Frozen DM being eliminated and taken over by Dairy DM. Meat DM being eliminated and Deli DM taking over their responsibilities. It depends a lot on the store but I kinda see this happening in the future, with those three DM jobs that I just mentioned cut from payroll, that's going to save the company a ton of money at the expense of others. It's something I could see Wal-Mart doing and I wouldn't put it past them.
Took this off reddit - someone had the same question earlier this week
