I did a Google search and as of Q3 2017, there are 594 Sears stores and 510 Kmart stores remaining. Are these numbers fairly close or have they gone down substantially more, recently?

You can look up the total numbers of stores in the annual reports. As of January 28, 2017 there were 670 full line Sears stores and 735 Kmart stores. The fiscal year ended a few weeks ago so the next report will be out in the next couple of months. The company has closed approx. 40% of the large stores over the past few years.
With all of the stealth closures and the fact that SHC closes stores on a "rolling basis", no one really knows how many stores are left.
You can't even click state by state and count because there are stores that closed last year still listed.

I think the real amount is about 100 off for Kmart.
