They asked us to rank the bottom 6% and I am hearing rumors that they will force us to put them on a pivot plan which basically equals a buyout or a fairly Unachievable improvement plan. Not sure when it will happen but this s---s. I came here to escape this crap.

Amazon has a 6% 'unregretted attrition' target in corporate. This means that, every year, as a manager of a sizeable org (20 and up give or take) you are required to get rid of at least 6% of your staff. To count as unregretted they must be on a dev plan at the time of departure. Once on a dev plan it is possible for employees to rescue the situation - I've seen it happen more than once - but most will then progress to what Amazon calls pivot. At this point they can take a package or ask for a performance improvement plan. If they fail the PIP they get statutory minimum layoff compensation. I have never seen anyone survive a PIP. ever.
That being said, 6% is actually a pretty low rate by tech company standards and I've never found myself in the position of having to force anyone out who I didn't think deserved it.
Once a year, we offer our fulfillment center associates up to $5,000 to quit. We're upfront with employees that we hope they don't take the offer, but we want to give them a chance to think about what they really want. If they want to pursue a different career, we want to support that.
Seriously !!!! comparing Amazon with Barnes and Noble. One laying off while making 2BN in profit and other is struggling for survival. Amazon's avg tenure is 2-3yrs. They don't have to announce a mass layoff. I guess the flywheel is not working due to the high stock prices :)
B&N is on the front page of CNBC so it came after Amazon.
Giving annual employee feedback is a little like driving cross country and steering every day or so.
most folks laid off will get replacement positions within amazon. if they like what's offered they can stay - also, just an fyi - barnes and noble laid off over 1,000 folks today and there was not a beep in the media - nobody cares...
meanwhile, a small bump on amazon side causes all media outlets to scream about 'layoffs at amazon' - gimme a break
Lots of glass spheres to build.
