H1b visa extensions on the chopping block

http://www.firstpost.com/world/h1b-extensions-on-the-chopping-block-4282721.html

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) can approve more than 330,000 H-1B petitions each year and, as of April 2017, reported more than 680,000 approved and valid H-1B petitions.

Over the last 10 years - from 2007 to 2017, Indians have taken the lion’s share of H1B visa approvals every single year followed by China in second place and Canada third. Indians have got a total of 2,237,478 H1B visas from 2007-2017 and 302,293 in 2017 alone.

From the 90s till today there are are about 500,000 h1bs, and perhaps another 300,000 green cards and naturakized citizens. The above figures are incorrect. The bulk of these are in firms like CTS, Infosys, Accenture, wipro that would have more than 50% h1bs. Intel, Qc would have limited h1bs. The h1bs obviously put in far more hours than the locals at least till they get a Green card. Curbing h1bs and causing reverse migration would also mean complete outsourcing of jobs to India, which would be good for Murthy with a 12k strong Bangalore workforce and a new site in Hyderabad coming up. The need of the hour is a balanced regulation that does not allow exploitation of the US local & H1bs. Minimum h1b wages and Capping of maximum work hours by the US govt as in Europe would ensure that the h1bs are not preferentially hired over the local workforce.

The quota for H1 B visas for recent years has been 85000 per year. So a figure of 300000 for any particular country does not make sense

There is a big tax break for companies exporting jobs overseas in the new Republican Tax bill.
