Thread regarding DeVry Inc. layoffs

Instructors expected to be tutors as well

A fundamental flaw in DeVry's approach was to blame the instructors for the lack of student learning, rather than realizing that most students lacked the skills to succeed in higher education, and that the DeVry classes were not structured to help students learn. Thus the company expected instructors to be tutors and instructor time was viewed as a costless asset.

The combination of a lack of student skills, the poor design of classes, and the profit pressure from the management combined to create a true diploma mill. When I taught for DeVry I was asked to "reconsider" grades, asked to change grades, asked to assign scores for work that had not been submitted, asked to allow all students to turn in work late at any time during the class (which makes managing the class impossible), and was reprimanded for student evaluation scores lower than normal. Once I stopped applying any type of real criteria to the student work and simply passed all students through regardless of what they submitted, my evaluation scores went up and management was happy. The students were the ones being cheated but most did not care as all they wanted was the degree, even if it was worthless.

The system in which DeVry functions allows it to be the very definition of a predatory company. Realizing this, the managers took full advantage of the ignorant students and sold them sub-par "classes" and a degree that is viewed with derision by industry. Retention at any cost, be it asking the instructors to tutor students to make up for a lack of basic skills, eliminating academic integrity, or providing poor class design, was paramount.

Well said, @Qs50UUP-spb.

It’s not EE it’s EET! No one explained the difference to me. People who run the program do not know anything they lie to students every day....

So sad, try to transfer to another school ASAP!

@dtlz:

Could you take your devry credits to a cheaper option as in at a community college and go for an AS in EET? This way you might be able to find a detour to EE later by transferring community college credits into a BS EE program at a university. The big thing would be to taking the 3 or 4 engineering calculus courses that are not part of EET degrees.

My parents want me to transfer to another school. I used to attend classes at their flagship campus in the burbs. Last month DeVry let go the best professors, now what is left? just mediocrity! I am trying to talk to other schools but having issues because DeVry’s degree is in EET and rest of schools offer EE programs. I thought I was pursuing an EE degree but not true they lied to me. It’s not EE it’s EET! No one explained the difference to me. People who run the program do not know anything they lie to students every day.

Well, the people who are drawn to these teaching jobs are not your typical cookie-cutter corporate types who can desiccate away their entire life in some HP grey cubicle lined with corporate policy binders. They are not corporate sharks with finely honed political skills, great career strategic masterminding skills and dreams that include an ocean front villa in Kauai and a Citation Jet.

They go into teaching/ education because they are more into wanting to help, grow, support, encourage people who want to broaden their horizons. They want to join those who want to open their minds and explore new ideas and topics. They are idealistic, empathetic, caring, often very naive, not very confrontational, and OK with being fairly poor. They are professors.

This. Even admitting that I may have been naive. I am not a cutthroat. I am not an idiot. I only wanted to ever help people and still do. My students are not homeless or gangsters. I teach them and they learn. Why is this difficult to understand? I really can only come to the conclusion that I am not seeing what the rest of you are seeing, elsewhere in the system. My onsite students are not what you people describe here. Maybe they are better prepped because they are usually cc transfers.

I want to make tee shirts that say “Welcome to DeVry. Affected colleagues were notified by their managers yesterday.” That’s the real slogan because that’s what the emails used to say when anyone got laid off. And it was almost constant. Or seemed that way. Now people just disappear and the processes that they own get broken so it’s hard to know how to get things done. Sometimes you do get a note that Jane Example “has separated from the organization” if they quit.

Devry Cares

...I think I have a t-shirt somewhere that says it, in case anyone forgets.

@Make Devry Great: Agreed. I taught both DeVry and UoP campus classes and the post is spot on with what goes on there as well. UoP will give you a target GPA for your class at the beginning of the class... Yeah. You read that correctly. If I had a whole class full of chimps, and a lot of times that is what it felt like given how these people dressed, talked and walked, I had to hit a GPA. If I didn't I had to answer to the 'leaders' of why I was not doing all I could to help our students. Gawd. The Deans and Chairs at these places are a bunch of monkeys doing something lewd to a football.

I've taught Kaplan and CTU online classes and same thing without having to actually deal with the face-to-face abuse by the students and the administration. You get hounded via email instead.

When a student actually asks if the degree is going to be worthless, you as the prof. have to toe the company line and say 'of course not', and then spout something from the school's advertising. You work for a Wall Street or NASDQ traded company, not some volunteer feel-good community service group. You do as they say or you can go elsewhere.

But: The post also summarizes my experience at two not-for profit online schools as well though! What is going on there?????

If they are anything put pure play business school professors (who are a bit more hip to what is going on in the economy) they only learned about the for-profit racket by being part of it and slowly going 'OMG, this is messed up'. I say slowly because they are not going to want to believe that any human being could be so callous as to exploit people for their tuition money. They are also unwilling to believe anybody would go to college just to collect extra money for rent or drugs (those would be the VA students and most of my gang/thug category students). These professors are naive in a way. The education industry is not.

Professors these days need to be like the Wolves of Wall Street. Cunning, ruthless, manipulative and completely free of any scruples.

@Que2wxJ-zsh stop inferring this place is a school. Devry is a diploma mill. It used to be a school with some integrity but that is gone. Defending them isn't going to save your job in the end, you will end up laid off like all the rest.

So what. You are paid to work and paid and told how do you do your work. If you do not like it start your own school. The government knows how devry operates and allow them to do it. There are not enough community colleges or jails to host them.
