I was rated a 3 as under performer . Should I resign or wait for severance package ? Should I continue to work hard to get a better rate next year?

Annual Business Planning starts in August I suppose. So mostly layoffs expected in Sep,-Oct.

2% people are rated in Improvement Required category. They would be mostly laid off.It has started already I suppose. Friday might be last day for few.
I got rank 3 this August, what all does this mean apart from 50% bonus cut. How often they do this ranking and how often people are fired. Is it mandatory for all managers to do rank 1 to 3 or they can escape as well. What about severance package if one gets fired on basis of rank 3.
I agree, don't refer to this as "clean up." These are real people and real lives that were impacted, some words of compassion costs the same as being cold and inhuman when expressing your opinions.
My view is this, for those affected, don't view this as a set-back. View this as being one step closer to be at a better employment! Like what Tupac said, keep yo head up!

laid off today ...my boss ranked me 3 (what ever reasons he mentioned to me , as a introvert , even i solved problems found out many issue that people are following wrongly past few years ...he praised me a lot ffor this but performance review ranked in 3 , finally HR called me , informed that "your are a good performer but due to cost cutting you have resign :( ")

As the last poster said management has to give at least a certain number of 3's. I've heard 5%.
So if you get a 3 and your manager says they were forced to do it to reach a certain distribution then you have some chance of saving your job at least for a few years.
If you get 3's two years in a row then you're probably gone.

I got three, too.
My manger said you did nothing wrong but we have to assign 3 to someone for the force distribution.

Got a 3 too, do not deserve it, but thats how it work in Hock's world. Take the RSUs for March 15 and June 15 then jump ship.

Probably most of rank 3 folks are demoralized as well, as there is no escape on 2018 layoff.
So better get prepare.
I agree, take all money for which you worked hard. Meanwhile, focus on sharpening your skills and actively start looking for job.
Worst cases you loose job, you will be better prepared for job interviews.

I definitely wouldn't quit this time of year. Bonus (I think even with a 3 you get something) in Dec and RSU's vesting in March. Maybe they'll lay you off before that but who knows? In the meantime get your resume ready and start networking with any colleagues from other companies that might want to hire you.
If you have Rsu's u can stay back . Ranking is temporary, next year u can make 2
Lawsuit is only if you have a strong case that the employer has violated some labor law or practice. If your situation doesn't have any of that it'd be thrown out and you'll be charged for the legal fees.

If no severance package, when will rated 3 employee be let go
after every review? Then there will be a lot potential law suit.

Thanks. I still have unvested RSU (527 units granted ). Hopefully if the retrenchment happens, they will compensate the unvested RSU to me.

If you have RSU &Esops u can stay back otherwise waste to of time. No hike no promotion 50% bonus, no severance package....
Every manager will have a 5%-10% reserved for 3.

No. Actually Once you get it, it is hard to get out.
