Everyone who was cut has been notified in SR yesterday. No biggy! Only 10-15%. They got 60 days to find another job. Life goes on...

Layoffs are far from over. JF committed to $400 million in cuts at GED which translates to a LOT more cuts in the next 12 to 24 months. Thousands of positions.

As a long term GE employee who took the Digital VJRP, I blame San Ramon generically and Predix specifically for the reason I had to leave a company I loved and was with with well over a decade and a half.

You idiots claimed excellent revenue because you abused IBS for all the GE employees who signed up for the Predix intro courses which turned out to be useless oauth demos. Then, six months later, everyone got hit with monster IBS bills - BR sure was proud of his revenue at that all hands! But it was all false money and we all saw it coming. Congrats on promising the world and delivering the end of an era.

The real change and cost savings should start from the top, not the bottom! Stop blaming the little guys.... they were just executing on failed and frequently changed strategy. Bringing "big shots" from google, msft, apple, oracle, etc. and paying them extremely high salaries will NOT fix the issues. History shows that it will actually makes it worse! They cannot and will not safe ge digital.

@QaEEzwH-vrs. Imelt plan to prevent this globalisation, emerging markets which equal risky markets, focus on industrialisation not financial. Outcome falling revenue when on paper it looked like nirvana and he gambled and we are all losing.

False - the industrial IoT space is growing at a huge rate and is a multi billion dollar opportunity. We might not have executed perfectly, but it isn't because of the "macro economy". Don't cast blame external. We can fix this.

All good points from a micro level...at a macro level -

The real culprit is simply a long protracted slowdown ("great stagnation") in global economic growth following the 07-08 recession.

GE was built on top of machinery that transformed the way huge swathes of the population lives. Difference in standard of living from 1940-1970 in advanced economies was black and white, night and day.

Think about how much standard of living has changed from 1987-2017. We have the internet, mobile phones, fast food, cheap clothes, cheaper cars. But the industrial backbone of advanced economies is made up of the same (slightly more efficient) machines.

You can even see Predix as an extension of this trend - its a platform that collects data to improve machine efficiency. It's not a new type of turbine, engine, or source of energy.

The world economy can't support how much GE's current volume and margins, which is, in part, a function of how much it pays its employees.

When productivity is high and global growth is going strong, everything is good, and people get benefits and pensions. We can overlook greedy execs because they're contributing to the pot rather than just taking more and more of a shrinking pie.

When growth is slow...it's painful. Look to the automotive software industry if you're looking for a growing market to apply your skills to.

"who is responsible behind th failure of APM or predix?" I see many of you give reasons of why there are a failures. I think most of you have pinpointed some good areas but I also think those are results of other larger issues. I will give examples in a bit. Regarding the layoffs, I truly believe that it was needed and that there are more needed.

Focus is something that has been missing since the very beginning. This "blame" goes to a large number of people, starting from the top, of course. We were always spread all over the place and still are. We have added more redundancy without thinking and this is one of the core issues -- not the redundancy, but the unbridled, unchecked, unaudited actions (whatever they may be). We have flippantly changed directions and added new initiatives and like a dog, chased after every new pretty bird, shiny ball, or squirrely squirrel that came across our path.

Accountability has been missing, largely because of an established culture of lack of accountability, but we need to ask WHY? One, when you have an established culture and too many leaders that act like this, it tends to spread. Two, there are no mechanisms for audit. These mechanisms should be known, visible, mostly automated. This enables TRACEABILITY. IMO, all of this is not to be used to just point fingers, but to point fingers with a purpose (e.g. how do we fix this or how do we change the behavior/skills of this person?)

With the right accountability, visibility, etc., one can highlight decisions that DON't work and that DO work. When Manager/Leader X makes a decision to create a product or feature or partnership we should have the tools/procedures in place to ensure that success is defined (why are we doing this and what do we want from it) and to then see if it is achieved. Tried and true stuff, really.

I can go on about other things but I will only highlight one more. No portfolio alignment. No collaboration. This has frustrated me for years. I've tried time and again. This is truly EVERYONE's fault from engineers to management. It's a shared blame. Management could foster collaboration but engineers or IC's could grass-roots collaborate and realign culture. I've done it before and I've seen it done before.

I believe there will be more layoffs (I don't have any insight or knowledge) but this is what I would do if I making some of these decisions ... carefully, looking to make sure the right people are in the right spots doing the right things. But before that can be done we need to DEFINE THE RIGHT THINGS.

who is responsible behind th failure of APM or predix. there was no root cause analysis, Management and architects who were responsible they either went happily or still there.only devlopers who worked day and night and weekends got affected. huge unfunctional middle management stil there to continue their politics.

Sales teams all let go - all of them, all regions. Some positions will open up but who will re-apply for them without any support? Without sales teams, you don't have Predix. We were making our numbers.

I heard that there were about 1000 people in SR. So 100 to 150 got cut? That's still quite a few, unless you were expecting the place to be shutdown. It is probably not the end. Predix has a flawed business model and no leadership. People will be lucky if they find a job in 6 months. It's takes a year for many people. I'd start looking now even if I wasn't cut.
