Here are the Qh1b salaries in san diego 2017.

What do you think. Is it cheap workforce or a competitive pay?

@@QZ47DAJ-3tws: obviously I would not even post if that were the case. Re reading my post I do realize I didn't frame it correctly. I meant to say the h1b notice is 10 to 20 percent lower than my base when it was filed . I don't wish to discuss this point any further as I don't want to make it a d--k measuring contest.

Also if you check the actual h-1b labor certifications , most are at level 3 or level 4 of wage level for the specific job code .There is no indication of any fraud or abuse from salary point of view which even the hardline groups like cis and numbersusa use but maybe I am biased or way too over my head.

Are you saying you were making 10% under the filed number, which by itself is already10-20% under the market range ?

Not really, they don't even reflect the actual base salary at the time of filing. In my instance it was at least 10 percent lower at the time of filling. That is a fact . I think the reason we get lower salaries compared to other people in tech and semiconductor is because qcom has become a monopoly and is currently engaging China with race to the bottom . There is no real competition to encourage fair market wages here. Even if h-1b is scrapped tomorrow, most of the jobs will be probably moved to a lower cost center.

@1cdm, partially agree. H1b salaries are ~20% lower for most folks. The. Numbers shown are the actual base pay employee earns at time of filing the h1b application papers. Could be either first time application. Or a renewal. I'd guess that the totally low numbers are the first time filers and the higher numbers are the renewals. The few in range numbers are probably those qcom trully needed and tried to lure in. The most are simply cheap labor.

Do keep in mind the salary mentioned below at least 10 to 20 percent below what the person actually earns in base pay. This database is based on the labor certification process where qcom probed the market.at that salary and couldn't find an American candidate for the skills listed.

What can we do about it ? Can we write our representatives and ask them to stop this madness?

A lot of H1b's aren't even on the list, likely because they are not sponsored directly by Q.

One thing to remember, a lot of H1b's are brought in to replace higher payscale employees, it's not uncommon for a senior employee to be PIP'd and replaced with a base starting salary engineer H1b whose payscale is 40k below who they replaced.

So even though the H1b looks like his salary is competitive, it's lower than who they replaced.

Also the overall effect of H1b's is to depress salaries.

I hired and managed a few people on H1-B visas at QCOM over the years. There was no different pay scale for them versus citizens. I heard some stories of abuse at some other companies, but at least in QCT where I worked, they were treated fairly and no different than others.

This is a great example of our idiotic immigration system. It took forever for many of these people to get green cards. These are exactly the type of people we SHOULD have immigrating. Professional, responsible, educated, fluent in English and paying taxes. Instead we have a lottery system and a Southern border that continuously lets in uneducated people with little to no English skills who often extract much more in government services than they contribute in taxes.

I hope this gets fixed, but I’m very skeptical about the odds of it happening in the face of business interests that want cheap low-skilled labor and Democrat politicians who

see them as a new voting base for them.

It looks like it varies... a number of the salaries seem in line with the Qcom payscale.... maybe the senior engineer salaries seem a little low ? But then senior is about 3 yrs experience,right?...in that context it seems like a lot of money.

There's only 168 H1B's in San Diego? That number seems low considering there's something like 14k number of employees in SD. Salaries are low, but not astronomically low. It looks like most positions are getting the lowest salary on the range available for that title... so ~100k for a Sr Eng, ~115k for a Staff Eng. Some weird outliers though, like that Sr Dir at $130k. In general, a b--cheaper than a US worker, but it's not like you're getting two heads for the price of one like you do when outsourcing to India.
