Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

If you have nothing to say say nothing

This my first job after college at Dell Storage. What I see here are motor mouth executives who love to hear their own voice. We have all hands after all hands after all hands by evp, sip, CTO... These fellas endlessly talk nonsense creating a maze of words without addressing questions properly. They are unable to articulate in simple terms on why Dell storage revenues have nosedived or how competition has eaten our market share or what are our remedial plans. I have now arrived at the conclusion that if you want to rise to the top echelons of corporate positions all you have to do is talk fast, talk endlessly twaddle a smokescreen of gibberish. Unfortunately I won't go far as I believe in Mark Twain's saying 'If you have nothing to say say nothing'

When your a hollow shell you tend to spew nonsense hot and fast to try and make others believe your competent. Dell has the worst most imbred upper management I have ever work for. Totally clueless about the markets they are going into believing that you can sell storage, security, networking etc like you can laptops which in themselves are fast become dinosaurs of the past. Most Dell AE's have no real deep relationships with their customers and aren't expected to, SE's for the most part are good folks but tend to have a shallow knowledge of storage/networking/security but yet their leadership tells the world that they don't need real expertise in storage or networking sales, just give us a CCIE nd we will be ok yeah..... Dell and EMC deserve each other have worked for both and both were on the way out all this merger will do is prolong the death spiral , make M Dell and his few top cronies richer and feed egos at the top as they convince themselves how great it is while the fire all the "little people'. I get a kick out of the Summits where M Dell shows up and we are all suppose to worship at his feet, kudos your filthy rich but it's not for leadership its for using Just in Time manufacturing and then treating the line like barnyard animals but if your the only game in town as they are in Austin you can do that.

I can sum up why storage array sales have nosedived in one word, 'Hyperconverged'. The datacenter paradigm is rapidly shifting away from the traditional host server and storage array configuration to the new world of software defined and hyperconverged computing, any vendor that does not embrace this new wave of technology is going to become irrelevant as quickly as the technology itself changes.

That said, Dell is making the most of a legacy storage portfolio while promoting hyper convergence with the VxRail and VxRack offerings as well as the ongoing partnership with Nutanix. Corporations of this size do not change quickly, but as long as management has the foresight to follow the emerging trends and shift the portfolio according they will do well. I think most of the high level exec's realize this and are slowly steering the ship in that direction, sales of the Vx products are skyrocketing with less emphasis on discrete arrays, time will tell how well they have executed the shift.`

80% of their JD is to talk and thinking morale is boosted from their mouth when it's more complicated than that.

I can enlighten you, dude - Two years ago Dell made the stupid decision to buy the doomed storage leader EMC. By the time the purchase was finalized most of the knowledgable EMC engineers left the company. As a result Michael Dell got stuck with a worthless piece of junk as far as storage is concerned. The remains of EMC which are now Dell are simply incapable to produce any competitive storage product because those who stayed are the lazy and/or unthinking ones. My advise to you as a recent college grad is - do not spend more than 5-7 years in Dell. Try to learn as quickly as you can and then take your hat and leave this mastodon. You will be much better off with a smaller and younger company.

one word. My manager is stupid. I support few other managers in terms of telling them how to think. They are very very stupid. Worth polishing your deflecting skills here because that's the only thing they do. Talk talk talk and give excuses which the dumber senior management buys, then find a scapegoat. Work smart here, by smart I mean zero to none contribution and lots and lots of talking and self-crediting and pushing away blame. Quite an easy life here. The vault is still quite full. On your free time learn up useful skills especially technical skills because you are not going to get any of that in Dell and when it sinks , which it will, look at your boss and peers is enough to conclude, you will be ready.

Dell upper management is like two first cousins that marry, they may get away with it and have normal children but more than often do not. Most have never left the Dell womb, have completely bought into their and their peers myth that they are the best in the business and that by doing the same things over and over again after first coming up with yet another bone head plan that crashes, they will get a new result. Storage is dead like networking because we report to a company and executive none of which have ever sold storage or networking at usually from the channel where they did little but collect a check and think they can use the same sales models for selling high touch, complex solutions as they do selling commodity client products.

Then I am dumb as f---, I cannot understand what the execs spew out of their mouths either. Funny thing is, i build powerpoints and data points for directors, and they never feed me anything, I went and discover every f---ing business sense myself while being stopped at every corner when I outstep my "boundaries". While they beat around the bush and being as high level and vague as "this plan A will make money but details on how will not be shared to you now", we are expected to speak as clear to them as possible in simple english. F---.

The middle management s---s. In BDC Storage for example it had plummeted to great heights or rather depths of verbal deception. The useless director and super techies used to out rightly lie and brag about themselves in the all hands. A highly unprofessional bunch who now looks like been put in place with their wings of authority and power clipped. I find top DELL executives pretty honest and powerful in their communication.

If you don't like what they say please express your views through the surveys they provide for all hands. I find most of these execs intelligent and excellent communicators. You might have limitations in understanding them.
