I'm getting really tired of being given more and more work and responsibilities for the same pay. We are sometimes doing the work of three or four people, not sure how long we can last like this! I'm not surprised people are quitting or simply not showing up, the pay is low enough as it is, and with everything that is expected of us, it's simply not realistic. The worst part is, we have people who barely do anything, and yet they get paid the same as the rest of us do. but they are good with the manager, so there's nothing we can do about it. And boy do they know it and use it. If the few of us who actually keep this place running decided to not show up for a few days, I honestly think this place would fall apart. The fact it, no layoffs are needed at Giant Eagle (at least at my location) - people are so fed up they keep leaving on their own. I know I have been looking at that door more and more.

Without taking a position for or against unions overall, as far as the payscale goes, that problem doesn't really exist at non union stores. I worked at one in the past and if you didn't do good work, you simply didn't get much of a raise. I did good work and watched myself get 40 cent raises while hearing some of my fellow TM's (the ones who were not the hardest workers) complain of getting only 15-20 cent raises. I can honestly say the team members who I knew that actually worked hard and cared most times never had an issue with how their merit reviews went
I agree with just about everything you, but employees need to take their share of the blame as well. Just recently I was thinking that since I first started, I'm being asked to do a lot more work and the pay is not matching the productive. At my store, in my department, we've had five people quit in the last month...four of them were new hires. The pay and the hours are terrible. Unless someone is specifically looking for part-time or seasonal work, it's very difficult to attract people to work here. And you can't run a store with so many people that are essentially temporary help. At the same time, by bringing in a bunch of new people instead of giving your current loyal employees more hours,or God forbid make them full-time, Giant Eagle is creating a culture of disinterest and resentment.
But with all that being said employees are at fault as well. Most stores are union shops and you should know what you're getting into on the very first day. The pay scale is laid out right in front of you. I know there was a small group protesters outside of HQ last month, and while it's nice to see some sort of passion from the employees, it's essentially worthless, nothing is going to change until they start negotiating a new contract next June. We'll see distance seem sort of passion is at work then. In Cleveland they just voted on a new union contract and since they counted the ballots this past Saturday I'm sure an announcement will come soon. But I already know what the outcome is...it passed...because it always passes. And it's the same people that complain about pay and hours that go right ahead and vote yes on new union contracts.
The bottom line is that if you are an unhappy Giant Eagle employee don't just think about getting out, do it! It may be intimidating and challenging to get a new job, especially if you've been at your old job for a while but there really is no future at Giant Eagle.
