Intel is now planning to program these FPGA chips to accelerate the performance of its x86 server CPUs. Chipzilla believes that the customizable and versatile nature of the FPGA chips makes them better at certain tasks when compared to GPUs.

A lot (several $B) of Goodwill was added to the Balance Sheet as the result of the transaction. Altera has been accretive to the bottom line, as was McAfee, and to a lesser extent, MobilEye. The jury is still wayyyyy out.
Real question is, how much of the $16B acquisition price if Altera was "conquered" till date? Will the quarterly income statements publish Altera contribution to the bottom line as a separate like e item? Where is accountability for acquisitions gone sour?

Well, announced Stratix 10 (still not available) is inferior compared to what Xilinx has on market in 2014. Meanwhile Xilinx released new 16nm family and 7nm is planned to first half of 2018. Next generation of Intel's FPGAs (10nm) will not be available at least until 2020 because of next gen HBM and off course 10nm process.
Now somebody explain me, why should anyone bother with Intel's FPGAs when there is Xilinx 2 generations ahead?
While the article is new, the news is old - this is what Intel stated back when they first bought Altera. It will have then taken them three years to get a discrete solution to market, if, as @bis muses, they can do it at all.
I'll believe it when I see it...
