I was laid off a year ago and have not found a job yet. The company gave me six months of COBRA. When the six months were over, I called to find out my options. I was a legacy CF employee and was told that they did not have access to the old CF system and could not tell me what the monthly fee would be if I wanted to continue COBRA at my own expense. Finally I got a bill and paid it. It was lower than when the company was subsidizing and of course this made no sense. I called BD and they said they would look into it. Never heard back. After a few more calls I gave up. I received a bill every month and paid it. Now after several months, my balance due is several thousand dollars. I think they finally caught their error and are trying to charge me the difference retroactively. Again I’ve called three times and they cannot even tell me what the monthly amount SHOULD have been vs what I paid - in other words, no explanation of how they arrived at the balance due. I can’t imagine I am the only person in this situation. Any advice?

I was laid off earlier this year also. I used COBRA and started a new job in August that made me wait 90 days for benefits so I continued paying COBRA. My severance would have run out this month and I got the bill, it went from roughly $650 to $1750. I guess they didn't make a mistake on mine. If I didn't have coverage from my new job that would have killed me. I'm not surprised you were misled by Benefits Direct. When I was laid off, I called them a month before my date, a couple weeks before my date, a couple of weeks after my date and they still cancelled my benefits for a month before I got them straightened out. They tell you anything and you hang up thinking everything is OK but you've got to constantly call back and get something in writing before anything is done. Sorry you haven't had luck finding a new position.
you can do obama care... it could be free or way cheaper than COBRA since i assume you are on unemployement.
