Thread regarding Dolby Laboratories Inc. layoffs

Dolby lays off 80 staff in Compliance division

Dolby has laid off more then 80 staff across SE Asia and other parts of the world in Compliance division . This is a stupid decision as it allows companies to use their IP without any fear of any action from complaince. Basically a free for all with Dolby's logos and trademarks, any company in China/ India can use and flout their IP without having to look over their shoulder.

Japan office, HK office, China office, Korea office all effected. Management in San Francisco should be laid off not the guys on the frontline. Again a really daft decision by members of the legal department who are too thick skinned to see the real work.

This also means a loss of millions of dollars in lost revenue which will now never be chased up.

For years companies in India , China, Sri Lanka, Malaysia have been using Dolby IP and not had to pay a penny. Dolby has lost over $ 15 million a year in India alone and in China the numbers are staggering. Management at San Francisco has chosen soft targets and not bothered to treat it as a level playing field. These new layoffs now mean that all the hard work carrried out by staff in Compliance in China, India, Japan, Korea, USA will come to no avail. Instead of investing in this department they have laid them off.

Unlike other compnaies such as Philips where Compliance is seperate from Compliance , Dolby compliance is governed by sales policies and will not go after certain brands who illegally flout their IP.

Unfair, I hear you say, well yes very much so. Shareholders should kick up a fuss as it means millions of dollars of potential bottom line cannot now, be collected.

The broadsheets should do some investigations about thi s as it is a clear that stock prices may be effected by this decision.
