Another coverage by the mainstream media...

Hillsboro chipmaker Qorvo is planning to lay off an unspecified number of employees in the coming weeks, the company has told employees.

The company made the announcement last week, saying that it would offer buyouts to some employees at its Hillsboro facility, which employs about 1,000 people.

Qorvo's chips are used in smartphones and other networking devices.

The company has not said when the layoffs are expected to begin. As of the Tribune's press deadline, the company had not filed a notice with the state's Rapid Response Activity Tracking System, which keeps track of mass layoffs across the state.

First reported by The Oregonian, the cuts are reportedly meant to help the company's overall cost structure, and aren't tied to a specific event.

Other Hillsboro tech companies, including SolarWorld and SureID, have made deep cuts to their employee numbers. SolarWorld has said cheap Chinese competition has effectively cut them out of the market for the solar panels the company produces at its Hillsboro facility. SureID, north of Highway 26, lost its largest consumer, the U.S. Navy, which said it would stop using the company's ID systems at its military bases.

This company has $3B revenue and $1B gross profit, but after paying employees and research it negates all the profit to a loss.

A company with $1B hires almost 9000 people. Regardless of the area the business is in, the number of employees is overwhelming. There are plenty of companies with over $1B GP with less than 4000 employees.

Anyone who work for a public company should look at their finance and VSP or layoff won't come as a surprise.
