Thread regarding IBM layoffs

PIP - Gone in 30 days?

Would someone be able to help here – I am a recent CbD grad and I was put on a PIP list. My manager told me I would be let go within a month if I am still unable to find myself a project.

I was trying to locate severance info on w3 – could not locate anything. Do you know what will happen once 30 days expire – am immediately terminated and would I be eligible for any severance benefits.

I’ve been on the bench for about 4 months. I keep looking for stuff and networking but half of the folks I’ve networked with are now gone (left IBM)… I applied for dozens of projects and still no luck - I keep trying but I cannot find anything on PMP…

You will NOT get unemployment if you accept the 30 days. IBM will claim that you quit.

30 days severance or work in that craphole another 30 days then be walked out?

Why put yourself through 30 more days of complete misery.

A no brainer. Take the severance, go on unemployment, look for a decent company to work for and get on with your life. Everyone I know who left IBM says it was the best thing they ever did.

There were so many stories on the old Alliance website where there is no way for anyone on a PIP to meet expectations. As with most companies, PIP is just a way to have documentation when they let you go. Unlike other companies, IBM uses it not to pay severance and to get around reporting layoffs numbers. Knowing IBM, you were not on a PIP because of performance, rather you happen to be the least favorite of your manager and on the bench too long. So don't sweat it, get your resume & skills up to date, network, and start applying to other companies. Life is better after IBM.

You are on PIP. You have issues with performance. If you do not fix the issues, you will be fired. If you are fired there is no severance.

Try to find the performance separation plan (PSP) - that's what you need, you don't need any documents that deal with severance as there will be none.

Also, as some posters noted below, if you are on a PIP, you have a 95% chance that you will be let go. In my 22 years I've seen many folks on PIP, it's very difficult to recover - most PIP issues have deep roots and it's difficult to change to fit the mold. This has nothing to do with you how or how smart you are - this has everything to do how good of a fit you are for what they need.

I hope this helps.

I cannot emphasize this strongly enough - @1toq has some wise words for "Recent CbD Grad"

You will find you cannot meet the metric laid out for you.

You have 30 days to decide whether or not to participate in the PIP. If you choose severance in that 30 days you are done on that day...period. you get 30 days plus 60 days of benefits with ibm's contribution. If you accept the PIP and don't meet the metric you are fired on the spot with no severance and no ibm paid insurance. You will find you cannot meet the metric laid out for you.

I would start looking outside the company, you are going to be a casualty very soon.
